Good morning parents,
To celebrate all of the wonderful achievements for our time in Year 1, we will be holding a shared lunch on Wednesday 7th of December.
We would really appreciate if the children could bring a small plate to share to have at lunch time.
We ask that the girls bring a savoury plate and the boys bring a sweet plate.
The children can still bring their sip and crunch and recess on this day but the share plate will be their lunch.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Many thanks

Book Week 2016
Last Thursday, OLC participated in a belated book week celebration to celebrate the theme of: Story Country which looked at the story of Australians from all around the country. The day started with a wonderful parade and the children loved telling each other who they had dressed up as!
The costumes were outstanding and definitely a big thanks to all you parents! The children read some wonderful stories and enjoyed the day with their friends. Here are some photos from the day :)

Bunnings is coming to Year One! Helpers needed!
Good afternoon parents,
On Thursday this week, 1st December, the children will be visited by Lisa from Bunnings in Busselton. She will be assisting us in making a pencil box for our Christmas craft that the children will decorate at a later date.
I'm asking any parents available on Thursday 1st December at 10am after the Year 3 performance assembly, to come and help with some (gulp) hammering and gluing of wooden pieces to create a pencil box. We require about 5 parent helpers to help on the day.
If you are available to help, please email me asap on:
Prowse.monique@cathednet.wa.edu.au
Many thanks

No home readers for the rest of the year
Good afternoon parents,
As we draw to a close on the school year, the lovely ladies in the library have asked that all home readers be returned to school ASAP as they need to start completing the stock take for next year. We ask that you return any home readers you might have at home by Wednesday 30th at the latest. You will receive a text or an email if they are not returned by this date. This also applies to any library books that might be at home too.
The children are still encouraged to read any books you might have at home or alternatively, you may choose to log onto Reading Eggs to complete any tasks and you can also access the library with texts leveled to your child's reading level (on the program).
If you have any questions or need their log in, please let me know.
Many thanks

Think Mentals last units
Good evening parents,
This is just a friendly reminder that the last two Think Mentals units (unit 21 and 22) will be due next Friday the 2nd of December. This will be the last for the year.
I would like to collect the books to pass them onto the Year Two teachers so the children can use them in class for the first few weeks for morning activities and to establish some homework routines.
If you could please ensure the books are handed in next Friday, that would be wonderful.
Many thanks

Year 1P visits the new nature playground
On Tuesday the children of Year 1P got their first private play on the nature playground!
The children were so excited to have a play and after going through a few rules, the playground was ready to be conquered!
We are so incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful playground provided by our P and F and we can't thank them enough!
They absolutely loved it and were very excited to be able to have another play tomorrow.

Place Value and the three little pigs
In Year 1P, we have been looking at place value and how we can read, write and represent numbers.
In the Western Australian Curriculum, children in Year One are expected to:
Count collections to 100 by partitioning numbers using place value (ACMN014)
Last week however, we were partitioning numbers to 1000! During our fairytale unit, we looked at the story of the three little pigs. There was a house made of straw, a house made of sticks and a house made of bricks. The children were given the opportunity to create the 4th little pig's house made out of MAB blocks.
The children worked in partners to create a house made out of MAB blocks. They had to design the house and then count how many blocks were used to create the house. Some children were even able to re-group with their numbers.
Here are some pictures of the children creating their houses.
We also looked at expanded notation and how a number can be broken down eg. 341 is amde up of 300+40+1 (3 hundreds, 4 tens and 1 one). The children loved playing the fruit splat.

Year 1P and Year 6 Buddy Mass
On Wednesday the 9th of November, Year 1P and their Year 6 buddy class were lucky enough to celebrate a mass together at Our Lady of the Southern Cross church.
We were very lucky that the weather heald out and we enjoyed a lovely walk through Mary Brook forest to get to church by 9.30am
The children were extremely reverent and the Year 6 buddies helped the children make the sign of the cross as they entered the church and genuflect as they sat down. The Year One children were in amazement watching Father Ian conduct the Mass and they showed their best manners whilst doing so.
Here are some picture of our walk and time at the church with our buddies.
The children had a wonderful time attending Mass with our Year 6 buddies.
Many thanks to Mrs. Delane and Father Ian for a lovely morning celebrating together.

Delicious Data
This week the children in Year 1P have been learning how to read, analyse and interpret data. When we first began out unit, we looked at our learning intentions and success criteria. This helped us to understand what data was and how we know we are successful when we represent, analyse and interpret it. Here is an example of our learning.
We then talked about ways we can gather data and we found the best way was to ask questions to find an answer. After this discussion we got down to the fun stuff...analysing data from an m&m packet. The children had to first estimate how many m&m' s were in the packet and then they used tally marks to represent the colours of each of the m&m's. The children then had to represent their tallies in a bar graph and give it a title, labels on the side and bottom and then analyse their data by answering questions.
The children loved this activity and found it extra delicious! Here are some photos of their findings.
The children have also looked at random data and how they can analyse it in a picture graph. They were asked to grab a handful of cubes and analyse this against someone else's handful. They loved this hands on activity and of course it was a competition to see who would grab the most!
These activities have been a great way for the children to understand And have fun with data.

Sight word review
Good evening parents,
As we are drawing close to the end of the year, both Mrs Rann and myself will be testing the children on their sight words, ready to hand over this information to their next teacher. Over the next 2-3 weeks, the children will be tested on their current set. They are expected to both read and write the first 100 sight words by the end of Year One.
We have some very clever children in Year 1P and many of the children have actually achieved the first 100 sight words and are on to the next 101-200.
If you have any questions or queries regarding your child's sight words, please see me or email me.
I will be posting the lists of the next 101-200 sight words tomorrow.
Many thanks

Spaghetti Science Fun!
In Science this week, Year 1P has been learning about how everyday materials and their properties can change. We explored how these changes occurred (eg. through cooking) and what happens to the materials when we experiment with it.
The children got a first hand experience with cooked spaghetti by getting their hands dirty. We discussed what we though spaghetti looked and felt like and then we got to have a play!
We then got to design our own spaghetti self portraits and used these brainstorm words to add to our picture. I could safety say the word of the day was STICKY!
Here are some photos of our Science exploration!
Stay tuned for next week when we look at the properties of uncooked spaghetti :)

Help! Glue sticks needed
Dear parents,
Due to unforeseen circumstances (A glue monster eating our glues) we have run out of glue sticks in the Year One classrooms :(
With 6 weeks of learning (and craft for Christmas) to go, we are asking if everyone could please bring in two glue sticks each to get us through to the end of the year.
We love and appreciate every thing you wonderful parents do!
Thank you in advance

Addition, Subtraction and Mathletics live!
Good afternoon parents,
This week our focus on addition and subtraction activities has grown from hands on and concrete materials to fast paced simple addition and subtraction on the ipads.
We have loved playing board games and card games to increase our understanding of addition and subtraction strategies learnt in class. Here are some pictures of the children loving our hands on, concrete learning!
We are now taking our learning from concrete to abstract by using our subscription to Mathletics within the class. We have loved playing Mathletics live on the I Pads which allows the children to increase their accuracy and build up their understanding in a fun and motivating way.
I have turned off their assigned tasks for the next two weeks to allow them to access this wonderful resource and have some fun while learning about Maths.
Here is some more information about Mathletics Live.
If you have misplaced your child's log in, please email me and I can let you know, otherwise they should be stuck to the inside of your child's reading file :)
Thank you

Surely maths shouldn’t be this much fun?
In an addition to the huge bank of core curriculum content, adaptive practice activities, eBooks and interactive tutorials; the live gaming area of Mathletics is so much more than a fun diversion. It’s a fast-paced and exciting way to improve mathematical fluency.
Students are matched with others around the world in LIVE real-time 60-second races, great for maths fluency!
Racing against each other, students answer as many maths questions as they can.
Students can be matched randomly or issue a challenge to their classmates.
Speed and accuracy are the key… three incorrect answers and you’re out of the game!

Our Learning in Term 4
Good afternoon Parents,
This term will be jammed pack and before we know it, it will be over!
This term we will begin by focusing on Fairytales which will be mainly integrated into our English block in the morning. We will be looking at a variety of texts and using an array of comprehension strategies to show our understanding of the text.
Our Writing focus will be Narrative, Persuasive and we will finish with letter writing in the lead up to Christmas (OMG, can you believe it?!).
Grammar and punctuation will be an important part of our writing program this term. We started the term looking at commas, creating comma kings and queens and exploring when we need to use commas in our writing. We will look revise capital letters, full stops and learning more about exclamation marks, apostrophes, question marks and quotation marks.
Our Math focus will be a revision of Addition and Subtraction strategies with a focus on using these to solve word problems. We will also be looking at data, place value, fractions, odd and even numbers, skip counting and patterning.
In HASS we will be looking at how we can change spaces within places and how they can be rearranged to suit different purposes and how we can care for these places.
In our Science unit we will be looking at the outcome of changes that occur to every day substances. We will explore physical and chemical changes produces by energy sources eg. heating, melting or freezing.
There are some important dates ahead this term, please write these down in your diaries:
Sunday 23rd October: OLC Festival of Fun starting at 10am - 3pm
Catholic Day/ Student free day: Monday November 7th (Week 5)
Year 1P Buddy Mass: Wednesday 9th of November (Week 5)

2016 Faction Sports carnival!
On Tuesday the 11th of October, OLC held their annual faction carnival. It was an absolutely beautiful spring day and the children came to school extremely excited to start the carnival!
The children looked outstanding in their coloured zinc and hairspray! The excitement continued as the children went into their faction bays and loved joining in with the older children cheering for the team.
Im not sure, but I think the motivation of lollies from the faction captains might have made the children cheer extra hard.
We were also very lucky that we were paired up with the Year Two children who guided us and worked with us through our EIGHT team games! My favourite has to be the 'Stone, bridge, tree'.
The children absolutely loved the day and we were so lucky to have such a gorgeous day!
Congratulations to our runner up champion boy Jaz and our champion boy Vinnie and our runner up champion girl Ellie and champion girl Skyla.
A big thank you to all the parents who helped with the event coordination, the set up and pack up and a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Sinclair for the wonderful day she put together.
Have a lovely night

Year One excursion to Wonnerup House!
On Friday the 16th of September, the Year One class set off on an excursion to Wonnerup house, just outside of Busselton.
The children we very excited to be on the bus and going to visit 'the old place' was also a very exciting concept for them.
We started the excursion with a 15 minute video about the history of Wonnerup House to which we found out that the whole community burnt down and had to be rebuilt!
We then set off in our groups with our wonderful parent helpers and started to explore the amazing grounds. We visited The Main House, The Black Smith shop, The Stables, The Dairy Kitchen and finally (and a personal) favourite The old School House. The children loved learning about all the olden day things like the wash board, the chamber pot, the Grandfather clock and many more!
The children absolutely loved looking at all the different things that the children in the past had encounter. The cane was one of the more fascinating features and the simple teachers house just metres away from the school was also an interesting facet to look at. One of the children commented 'Wow the teacher must have gotten bored here' was a priceless moment during the excursion. I'm sure that that would have been the least of her worries :)
We then had our lunch and participated in a variety of olden day games including cricket, quoits, hoola hooping, skipping and good old fashioned hide and seek. The sun came out throughout the day and some of the Mum's loved sun baking and catching a glimpse of that Spring sun.
It was an absolutely wonderful day and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of our wonderful parents: Carolyn, Michelle, Sally, Sean, Julian and Suthawan.
The children had a wonderful time learning about children in the 'Olden Days'.

A few reminders...
Just a few reminders for the next two weeks:
Think Mentals
Thank you to all those people who handed in their Think Mentals books on Friday. I have loved seeing all learning occurring at home! Thank you to all those parents that are giving their children instant feedback.
The next fortnight we will be working through Unit 13 and 14 but as the school holidays begin at the end of next week, we ask that the children hand them in next Thursday 22nd September (which is the day of the sports carnival)

Help for the Excursion
Good afternoon parents,
Thank you to all the parents who have offered to help on the excursion! We had 13 parents that have offered which is wonderful!
As there were so many offers, I popped the names into a hat so if the following parents are able to help, that would be great!
Mr. Matthews
Mrs. Kerr
Ms. Moylan
Mrs. Gray
Mr. Greening
Please let me know if you can't make it and I will draw the next lucky name (I feel like a lotto girl).
Thank you again for your ongoing support

Learning Journeys Week 10
Good evening parents,
On Monday the 19th of September (week 10) we will be having our Year One Learning Journey afternoon. This will run from 3.30pm - 5.20pm in 20 minutes blocks. We ask that you place your name into a time slot on the Learning Journey time table outside our classroom. Please be aware that there are only 8 families per time slot as we want this time with your child to be special.
At the end of the 20 minutes, a bell will ring so we are able to prepare for the next group. We ask that you be prompt to your session as we would like you to see as much of your child's Learning Journey as possible.
We are looking forward to sharing this special time with you and your child.
Thank you Miss Prowse

3D object CRAZY!
Good morning parents,
Over the last week the Year ones have been learning about 3D objects. We have learnt the features of a variety of shapes including a sphere, a cube, a pyramid, a cone and even square based pyramids and triangular prisms!
I have said to the children that I would put the songs and games that we have played as a class on the blog (I'm sorry if the song gets in your head) as they would love to share their learning with you!
Here is the song we have learnt about 3D objects being everyday things:
I hope you have fun listening to the song and poem and playing the games with your children :)

Year 1P goes shape crazy!
Last week, Year 1P started their investigation into 2D shapes. We looked at lots of different shapes and were able to name a lot of them! We looked at the features of each shape and found out how many edges and corners each of them had. This relates to the Australian Curriculum outcome of:
Recognise and classify familiar two dimensional shapes and three dimensional objects using obvious features (ACMMG022)
We sang a great song and even found out there were shapes called a nonagon and a dodecagon! What funny names!
The song can be found just here - sorry if it gets in your head!
We then experimented with shapes using pattern blocks and had some fun making different pictures and designs. Have a look at our learning below!
We loved learning about 2D shapes, keep an eye out for what we learn about 3D shapes!

Mission Market Madness
On Friday the 13th of August OLC celebrated our feast day of the Assumption of Mary. We began the day with a beautiful prayer service with the whole school, the song 'Gentle mother' was a gorgeous start to our day. We then returned to the class and completed some feast day activities and if you have a little look at our class door, you will see some beautiful pictures of Mary that the children completed.
The stalls were then set up for the mission markets and I must say...the lucky dip stall was an absolute hit! We sold out very quickly and the children loved all the little stationary and toys that were packed into the bags. Thank you again to all the families who donated things for the lucky dip.
The sun came out and the games, lollies and fun were a massive hit with the children! Here are a few snaps of the children having fun in the sun!

Here are a few pictures of the children having a ball taking part in Go Noodle activities.
Thank you for all the support for the Mission Markets!
