Casuals for Catholics Day Tomorrow

Good afternoon parents,

This is just a quick reminder to let you know that tomorrow will be a FREE DRESS day for a gold coin donation. This is to help support Casuals for Catholic's Day which raises money for Bishop Holahan's fund for the Diocese.

Thank you to all of you for your ongoing support. I know that a child's learning does not finish at school and I really appreciate all of the extra support you do at home to support your child. I could not do it without you!

Reports will be going home tomorrow in your child's bag. If your child is not at school, they will be posted out to the address you have given the school.

If I don't see you, have a wonderful break and I look forward to seeing you next semester!

Thank you

Miss Prowse

We have wonderful gardeners in Year 1P!

Over the last 4 weeks, we have been caring for and growing our wonderful bean seeds. We have watched them sprout and develop into strong bean plants that were ready to grow on their own, out of their seedling pots!

We were very lucky to have Sally Gray and Michelle Kerr come in and help us plant our plants into the OLC food garden. The children got their hands dirty (well their gloves dirty) and found a special spot in the garden that the plants could climb up onto as they grew.

Here are a few photos of the children in our class getting involved in the bean life cycle activity.

After we planted our beans, we came back into class and reflected on the bean life cycle and constructed lifecycle wheels to show our understanding.

We loved planting our seeds and we are very excited to cook with our beans when they start producing delicious broad beans!

Thank you to Sally and Michelle for their wonderful help :)

Think Mental Books Due

Dear Parents,

This is just a friendly reminder that the children's Think Mental Math books are due in tomorrow.

Thank you to all those people who have handed in their books early.

Please make sure your child has completed unit 4 (pages 13-15) and it has been marked with a positive comment to say how proud you are!

Remember if your children finish their unit early, they can go onto Mathletics to complete assigned tasks.

There will be NO Think Mentals homework for week 10 so we will keep the books at school until next term where we will be moving to one unit each week (which will make it a bit easier to keep up to date with).

See you tomorrow

Fun with Potion Procedures!

On Friday morning the children from Year 1P had a wonderful time making a potion for Mrs. Beatty. The Friday before, we had a shared writing session where children from the class helped put together a procedure for a potion that would turn Mrs. Beatty into a frog!

We got all the ingredients from the potion ready to put into our bowl.
These included: alien frogs legs, large frog eyes, rotten bananas, green slug slime and dead lady bugs.

Paige and Tieg loved being my witch and wizard assistants and we followed the procedure to mix to potion together for Mrs. Beatty. The children loved mixing in all the gross ingredients!

It was now the time for Mrs. Beatty to drink her potion, to see wether she would turn into a frog! Although it was a a bit chunky, Mrs. Beatty put a spoonful into her mouth and ran out the room from the horrible taste! We had a few people in our class that were worried for Mrs. Beatty and asked if they could go and check on her. I assured them that she would be ok.

After 2 minutes Mrs. Beatty returned and to the whole classes' surprise she had turned into a frog!! The children were extremely excited that their potion worked and some of them even got a bit scared that a was a real witch! (only on the weekends)

Luckily, we gave Mrs. Beatty another spoonful of potion and she turned back into her normal self in time for morning tea!

The children loved learning about procedures in this fun and magical activity!

Parent Information for Cross Country

This Thursday is our school Cross Country. The children will arrive at school and normal and settle into class and do some stretching with some yoga. We would ask that you find a place down in the spectators section before the race begins!

We will then proceed to walk down to the oval at around 9:00 am. The Year One children will be running first so if you would like to come for the first part of the morning, we would love to see you there!

As this is our first double stream class to come through the school, the children will be running in their classes (Year 1P boys and Year 1P girls) and the children will be timed when they finish their race. Year 1L will then run their race and after the judges have compared times, a winner overall for year one boys/girls will be announced.

The children are required to wear their faction shirt on the day and bring a full water bottle and their sip and crunch in a labelled container. After they have run, the children can have their sip and crunch and enjoy the races of the other children.

Can't wait to see you then!

Real Heathy kids comes to OLC!

The children of Year 1P were extremely lucky to have Sally Gray from Real Heathy kids come in and run a heathy food work shop for the children today.

We loved learning about good fats and all the elements that make up our body. Sally taught us about real foods and fake foods and how it is important to give our body real food so it can grow and best the best person we can be!

The children were involved in making delicious Eggy Wraps and Apricot Bliss Balls. These were absolutely delicious (I had to have a taste) and the children loved learning about food in a fun and hands on way!

The Real Heathly Kids workshop also integrated into our English program of writing procedures!

Some pictures of the children making their healthy food!

The core elements of the Real Heathy Kids workshop:

1. Real Food is the ONLY food that can truly provide the body with what it needs
2. Fake (factory) Foods WILL harm if not in the short term then in the long term the best they can offer is as a filler in the tummy taking valuable space for the foods our kids need to ensure their optimal health, growth and development
3. It if grows and you can make it in the kitchen then eat it!
4. If it can ONLY be made in a factory then find better alternatives
5. Emotional wellbeing is key!

The recipes we enjoyed today were:

Eggy Wraps: organic free range eggs and sea salt cooked in butter to make a thin pancake to use as a wrap.

Tangy Slaw:
Shredded cabbage
carrot
apple
snow peas
bean sprouts
goji berries
sultanas.

Tangy Dressing:
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup EV Olive Oil
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 tsp tamari
only use as much as needed and the rest keeps in the fridge.

Apricot Bliss Balls:
Blitz 1 cup organic Turkish Apricots (these are the BEST and have an incredible flavour)
1 1/2 cups dessicated coconut
1 1/2 cups sunflower seeds
1-2 tsp vanilla grind or 2 of real salt
 2 heaped tbsp tahini
1-2 heaped tbsp local raw honey (I used Karri)
 roll and enjoy!

Thank you so much to Sara, Elissa, Waveney, Shannon, Sara B, Shantelle (and Harry) for coming into help us today. We couldn't have done it without you all!

A huge THANK YOU to Sally for providing all of the delicious treats for us! We loved it!

Have a lovely night

Funny faces and terrific teeth

In year 1P we have had such fun continuing our study of procedures. We have used the text structure to make some delicious things....including funny face biscuits!

As a class, we only had the pictures that made up the procedure of the funny face biscuits so we had to write a procedure together using the picture clues and our knowledge of verbs. The children created a wonderful procedure to make the biscuits and were happy to use that procedure to make these delicious creations! One even got snuck into my desk (thank you Mrs. Rann).

Here are some snaps of the children making funny face (biscuits too).

We had such fun making our delicious treats that we thought that we need to make sure we were looking after our body - in particular our teeth. What better way to show that we know how to take care of our teeth than to brush our teeth!

The children had a wonderful time getting their teeth nice and clean and seeing each other with toothpaste all over their mouths! There were some funny faces pulled when brushing their teeth too!

After brushing our teeth, we came back into class and the children wrote their procedure of how they brushed their teeth. They were very keen to do this as I said it would be wonderful to go and teach the Kindy children how to brush their teeth! We had some very keen writers to read their work and some very keen 'brushers' to brush their teeth and show the Kindy children how it's 'done'. The Kindy children loved it and were amazed at the talented Year One children!

The children had a wonderful hands on fun learning about procedures!

Toothbrushes needed for Thursday

Good evening parents,

In class we have been learning about procedures. On Thursday we are planning a hands on activity which is encourages cleanliness and children taking care of their wonderful teeth!

We are asking that children bring their toothbrushes in a clear snap lock bag with their name on it to school on Thursday so they can take part in this hands on procedure.

I know we will have a few experts in our midst!

Real Heathly Kids workshop coming to Year 1P!

Dear parents of Year 1P,

On Wednesday of week 8 (June 15th) Sally Gray of Real Healthy Kids will be joining our class for a fun and informative session teaching the kids about "real" food, playing some educational games and doing some food prep and eating.

We would love as many parents as possible to be there to help out. We need about 5 parents to help out with this wonderful activity so if you are able to help out, could you please email me at: prowse.monique@cathednet.wa.edu.au or come and see me directly.

This is such a valuable lesson, teaching our kids skills they need for life to maintain their own health.

Your support will be very welcome.

We are very excited to have such a wonderful resource coming in for our children!

Many thanks Sally!

Snail Surprises!

In Science we have been looking at the Biological Sciences outcomes of:

Living things have a variety of external features (ACSSU017)
Living things live in different places where their needs are met (ACSSU211)
We have looked at Earthworms, Slaters and Snails and how they are different and have different needs. We started by drawing what we thought a snail looked like. We then got our slimy little friends out and on the ipad, the children had a close look at the snails. We saw that they had a very slimy body and moved from place to place with their one foot. We also found out that just like caterpillars, they have a breathing hole!

We then returned to our investigation and drew a labelled diagram of a snail. The children's drawing were very detailed! We loved learning about these slimy creatures. If you would like to watch the video we watched in class, please click on the video below :)

Procedure Fun in Year 1P

This week in Year 1P we began exploring the text structure of Procedures. We found out that we need procedures to help us make or do something.

We found out that a procedure is made up of 3 parts:
A Goal/Title
Materials/Ingredients
Method/Steps.

What better way to start our procedures than to make something delicious! On Wednesday we made delicious Jam sandwiches (Miss Prowse's version of cooking). The children loved making the sandwiches and following a simple procedure to get this done. We split up into groups and made our sandwiches with the help of Mrs. Rann and Kate Maslin (thank you ladies!).  There were many sticky fingers but I loved seeing the children talk about the procedure and getting the steps back into order in their English books after they made them!

On Thursday we 'cooked' again with the help of Mrs. Rann and Ms. Kent. We followed the more complex procedure of how to make play dough. The children loved mixing the ingredients together and of course adding to food colouring! We even got to add some smells to our play dough (coconut, vanilla, chocolate).

The children got to take home their play dough today and were extremely proud of making it :)

We had a lot of fun learning about procedures!
