Spaghetti Science Fun!

In Science this week, Year 1P has been learning about how everyday materials and their properties can change. We explored how these changes occurred (eg. through cooking) and what happens to the materials when we experiment with it.

The children got a first hand experience with cooked spaghetti by getting their hands dirty. We discussed what we though spaghetti looked and felt like and then we got to have a play!

We then got to design our own spaghetti self portraits and used these brainstorm words to add to our picture. I could safety say the word of the day was STICKY!

Here are some photos of our Science exploration!

Stay tuned for next week when we look at the properties of uncooked spaghetti :)

Help! Glue sticks needed

Dear parents,

Due to unforeseen circumstances (A glue monster eating our glues) we have run out of glue sticks in the Year One classrooms :(

With 6 weeks of learning (and craft for Christmas) to go, we are asking if everyone could please bring in two glue sticks each to get us through to the end of the year.

We love and appreciate every thing you wonderful parents do!

Thank you in advance

Addition, Subtraction and Mathletics live!

Good afternoon parents,

This week our focus on addition and subtraction activities has grown from hands on and concrete materials to fast paced simple addition and subtraction on the ipads.

We have loved playing board games and card games to increase our understanding of addition and subtraction strategies learnt in class. Here are some pictures of the children loving our hands on, concrete learning!

We are now taking our learning from concrete to abstract by using our subscription to Mathletics within the class. We have loved playing Mathletics live on the I Pads which allows the children to increase their accuracy and build up their understanding in a fun and motivating way.

I have turned off their assigned tasks for the next two weeks to allow them to access this wonderful resource and have some fun while learning about Maths.

Here is some more information about Mathletics Live.

If you have misplaced your child's log in, please email me and I can let you know, otherwise they should be stuck to the inside of your child's reading file :)

Thank you

Miss Prowse

Surely maths shouldn’t be this much fun?

In an addition to the huge bank of core curriculum content, adaptive practice activities, eBooks and interactive tutorials; the live gaming area of Mathletics is so much more than a fun diversion. It’s a fast-paced and exciting way to improve mathematical fluency.

Mathletics Live Video

  • Students are matched with others around the world in LIVE real-time 60-second races, great for maths fluency!

  • Racing against each other, students answer as many maths questions as they can.

  • Students can be matched randomly or issue a challenge to their classmates.

  • Speed and accuracy are the key… three incorrect answers and you’re out of the game!

Our Learning in Term 4

Good afternoon Parents,

This term will be jammed pack and before we know it, it will be over!

This term we will begin by focusing on Fairytales which will be mainly integrated into our English block in the morning. We will be looking at a variety of texts and using an array of comprehension strategies to show our understanding of the text.

Our Writing focus will be Narrative, Persuasive and we will finish with letter writing in the lead up to Christmas (OMG, can you believe it?!).

Grammar and punctuation will be an important part of our writing program this term. We started the term looking at commas, creating comma kings and queens and exploring when we need to use commas in our writing. We will look revise capital letters, full stops and learning more about exclamation marks, apostrophes, question marks and quotation marks.

Our Math focus will be a revision of Addition and Subtraction strategies with a focus on using these to solve word problems. We will also be looking at data, place value, fractions, odd and even numbers, skip counting and patterning.

In HASS we will be looking at how we can change spaces within places and how they can be rearranged to suit different purposes and how we can care for these places.

In our Science unit we will be looking at the outcome of changes that occur to every day substances. We will explore physical and chemical changes produces by energy sources eg. heating, melting or freezing.

There are some important dates ahead this term, please write these down in your diaries:

Sunday 23rd October: OLC Festival of Fun starting at 10am - 3pm

Catholic Day/ Student free day: Monday November 7th (Week 5)

Good evening parents,

This is just a friendly reminder that Units 15 and 16 will be due next Friday the 21st of October. The children are doing such a wonderful job working through each of the units and I can see this coming into their learning in class.

Thank you for marking your child's work and giving them some instant feedback, it is very much appreciated :)

2016 Faction Sports carnival!

On Tuesday the 11th of October, OLC held their annual faction carnival.  It was an absolutely beautiful spring day and the children came to school extremely excited to start the carnival!

The children looked outstanding in their coloured zinc and hairspray! The excitement continued as the children went into their faction bays and loved joining in with the older children cheering for the team.

Im not sure, but I think the motivation of lollies from the faction captains might have made the children cheer extra hard.

We were also very lucky that we were paired up with the Year Two children who guided us and worked with us through our EIGHT team games! My favourite has to be the 'Stone, bridge, tree'.

The children absolutely loved the day and we were so lucky to have such a gorgeous day!

Congratulations to our runner up champion boy Jaz and our champion boy Vinnie and our runner up champion girl Ellie and champion girl Skyla.

A big thank you to all the parents who helped with the event coordination, the set up and pack up and a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Sinclair for the wonderful day she put together.

Have a lovely night
