Week 7 Information

Shoeboxes
Thumbs up to those if you who have already brought in donations for our Christmas Shoeboxes. Please remember that we require $2.50 per child for the postage of these boxes. A note went home last week regarding what type of item we would like your child to donate. The girls are purchasing gifts for girls and the boys purchasing for boys. These gifts will bring a great smile to the children who receive them at Christmas time. Thank you all for your generosity!

Sight Words
Please continue to allocate some homework time towards practising sight words. As your child moves through each list, you will notice the words become progressively more difficult. Focusing on mastering 5 words at a time can be a great way to help your child progress through each list of words. It is great to see how eager many of the children are to be regularly tested on their sight words!

Jumps and Throws - Faction Uniforms
The Year Ones will be required to wear their sports uniforms (faction shirts) on the following two Tuesdays (5th September and 12th September). This is because the children will be doing their jumps and throws on these days. Sports uniform will also continue as normal on a Thursday and Friday. We will update you next week on the timetable for jumps and throws, should you wish to come along and watch.

Think Mentals
Our next Think Mentals units (units 13 and 14) are due next Friday 8th September.

Happy Father's Day to all of the Year One Dads! We hope you enjoy tasting your presents (please use your present by the 8th September).

We are 100 days smarter!

Today we celebrated the 100th Day of School and I can certainly say the whole class had a wonderful day! We participated in a variety of 'One hundred' activities throughout the day and the children had lots of fun reflecting on all of the things they had learnt throughout the year.

We said we learnt things such as:
- Skip counting in 2's,5's and 10's
- How to do spelling in our journal
- How to write a whole page of writing
- Use full stops and capital letters
 and how to Go Noodle!!

In the next 100 days we said we would like to learn how to...
- Count to 1000
- Become an author
- Be an einstien on Mathletics
-  Skip count in 3's and 4's

We participated in a variety of 100 activities including:
- Write 100 words on a piece of paper
- Build a sculpture using 100 cups
- Write all the way to 100 in chalk
- Build card houses using 100 cards
- Build a structure out of 100 pieces of lego.

Here are some pictures of our '100 Day' activities!

After our activities it was time for our delicious shared lunch. We LOVED tasting all the delicious food and there were many happy faces when the sweets came out! Both classes were full to the brim at the end of lunch and enjoyed having a play after the wonderful feed.

We absolutely loved celebrating our 100 Days of School and we have to say a BIG thank you to all the Mum's and Dad's who cooked and made some delicious food!

Congratulations on getting your children through 100 days of school!

Reading records

Dear parents,

As we change books every two days it's very important that you write down if your child has read a particular book. This ensures that your child doesn't get the same book and it gives us some feedback if the book is too hard or easy.

Here is a good example of a filled out reading record.

Thank you for your support

Week 6 Information

SCHOOL PHOTOS
This Thursday the children will be having school photos. As per the information in the newsletter, the Year Ones will be required to come to school dressed in their full winter uniform (including jumpers) and are asked to have their sports uniforms, sneakers and socks stored inside a plastic bag in their school bags. It is a busy time, training for team games and races for our upcoming Athletics Carnival at the moment!

WONNERUP HOUSE EXCURSION
A letter will go home later this week, outlining our class excursion that will be coming up on Friday of Week 9. We are asking that the children come to school dressed as a child from the ‘Olden Days,’ to make our experience a little more authentic. The Year Ones have had a fabulous time learning about life in the olden days at school and this excursion will enable us to experience a taste of what life was like firsthand.

THINK MENTALS

Please note that our next two units of the the Think Mentals Book (Units 11 and 12) are due this Friday.

100 Days of school Celebration

100 Days of School
Next  Friday 25th August, we are celebrating 100 Days of Year One! We are a few days out from the actual date, however we have chosen a Friday to celebrate so that we can join classes  in a shared lunch from 12:30pm. To celebrate this wonderful milestone  we will be participating in a range of fun games and activities that will enable us to practice our number recognition to 100. We would really appreciate if the girls can bring a plate of sweet food to share and the boys, a plate of savoury food to share. Please ensure that there are no nuts, as we have children in our classes with allergies. The children (and teachers) are really looking forward to celebrating this special occasion together...and celebrating that we are 100 days smarter!!

Mission Markets
We had a successful afternoon at the Mission Markets yesterday, raising $1256 for Caritas! What fun we had exploring through second hand books and toys, playing games and enjoying tasty treats from the cake stall. Thank you ever so much for your generous donations towards our Lucky Dip stall. See the pictures below for just a snippet of the fun that we had!

Think Mentals
Our next two Think Mentals units are due on Friday 25th August. Please ensure that your child has their Maths book packed into their homework folder on this day. The Units that need to be completed are Unit 11 and Unit 12.. Thank you for your guidance and support with homework time.

Don't forget - this Friday is a Pupil Free Day!

OLC shoe boxes - Operation Christmas Child

Good morning Parents,

Over the next couple of weeks, the Year One  children are going to participate in an initiative called 'Operation Christmas Child' which aims to pack a shoebox to give to a child who has never received a gift before. This ties into our school value of Compassion as we are helping less fortunate children in need.

Please see below an example shoe box:

Your child will be grouped with three other children to contribute and pack the shoebox. The cost to send a shoe box will be $2.50 per child.  We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the shoebox.

Your child will bring home a note which shows you what kind of items can be sent away in the shoebox. We are asking for all donations to be brought to school by Friday 8th September (end of week 8) please. It is very exciting for the children to share in this initiative which has been a part of the O.L.C. Community for the last 14 years.

Thank you for your support.

Mission Market Update and Outline of the day

Good evening parents,

A HUGE thank you to everyone who brought in items for our lucky bag stall for the Mission Market this Tuesday. I had a few sneaky eyes looking at them as they came through the wet area so I know the kids are going to love them!

The Mission markets is a day dedicated to Mary our Mother and to celebrate our school's feast day. The morning will begin with a whole school Mass (which you are welcome to attend) in the hall at 9:00am. This will be conducted by visiting Priest Fr. John Finlayson.

Some information about the outline of the day:

9:00-10:00 - Whole school Mass in the hall

10:00-11:00 - Classroom activities dedicated to our Mother Mary

11:00-11:20 - RECESS

11:20 - 11:45 - Continue with activities while the K/PP's visit the stalls

11:45 - 12:45 - Children can walk around the stalls and enjoy the festivities!

12:45- 1:30 - LUNCH

1:30 - 2:50 - Rotational Games
Children will be placed with their Year Six buddies and will participate in some fun games and activities such as Go Noodle, Lego construction, German Dodge, Mindfulness Colouring just to name a few!

The Junior children have been asked to bring no more than $5 or $6 (in coins if possible). I have found placing the coins in a clear snap lock bag with your child's name labelled on it works very well.

I have also found that the children LOVE the pre-loved toy stall so having a plastic bag in their school bag to carry their treasures is always a good idea. You'll be amazed at the wonders they will bring home :)

If you have any questions or queries, please email me.

Have a lovely night.

Mission Markets Are Approaching!

Think Mentals
A reminder that our next two Think Mentals units are due in Week 4 (next Friday 11th August). The children have been asked to complete Units 9 and 10 by this date. Thank you for your continued support with homework.

Mission Markets
Our annual OLC Mission Markets are fast approaching (Tuesday 15th August). This year, both Year One classes are running a Lucky Dip stall. We are asking for donations of various small toys, stationery or wrapped lollies/lollipops that can be put into lucky dip bags for the children. If you can get your hands on bulk packs of party toys like parachute men, party glasses, balloons, erasers or pencils this will enable more children to have a chance at our lucky dip stall. Coles, K-Mart and The Reject Shop all have great party sections where you can purchase a variety of these items.

If we could have all donations brought into class by next Thursday 10th August it would be much appreciated. Many thanks for your support with our Mission Markets. All funds raised go directly to Caritas to support those in need.
