Grandparents Day was a huge success for Year 1P we had so many wonderful grandparents come in to celebrate this wonderful OLC tradition. The day started with a beautiful prayer service dedicated to our beautiful Grandparents. The slide show that Mrs. Meyer put together was absolutely stunning and I can definitely vouch for some tears eyes in the crowd - including my own! The Grandparents then enjoyed a delicious morning tea and came into the classroom to participate in some activities.
The children loved showing their work to their Grandparents, painting a picture with them, playing some Maths and sight words games and creating a pic collage of photos of them. The smiles from both children and grandparents alike were a wonderful sight to see!
A great morning was had by all, below are some pictures from the day.
Thank you to those who provided some delicious morning tea and thank you again to the outstanding Grandparents!

Year One Bug Catchers
Year One Bug Catchers: A Technology Design Project
On Friday morning after assembly, Year 1S and Year 1P tackled the challenge of creating their very own bug catchers. After weeks of planning and designing their own creations, the children were delighted to be able to finally put their ideas into action! We are very thankful for all of our hands on parent helpers who gave up part of their Friday to sticky tape, hot glue and assist with refining the Year 1's designs. The project would not have happened without you!
After lunch, the Year 1's set off on an expedition into the bush to find as many bugs as they could. We came across a number of bees, spiders ants, snails and a few VERY LARGE bull ant. We discussed how we need to be safe when hunting for bugs, as well as how we also have the option of setting our bugs free after viewing them in our bug catchers. We hope you all had a lovely weekend exploring, hunting and collecting bugs!
Thank you again for all of the donations of items. As always, the parents are so supportive of our teaching and learning program!

Cross Country
A reminder that the children are asked to wear their coloured faction T-shirts for Cross Country on Thursday morning. Please refer to the newsletter and the email sent out today for further information on our whole school Cross Country event.
Refugee Rice Day
Many thanks to the parent helpers who have volunteered to cook and serve lunch on Refugee Rice Day. The children who are having rice are asked to bring in an empty lunch container from home to save on waste.
Bug Catchers
We have planned to make our bug Catchers this Friday between 11.20-12.30. The children have been busy collecting items as outlined in last week's blog post. We are still looking for parent helpers to make this activity possible and are happy to move the activity to straight after assembly if that would suit more people. Be prepared for lots cutting, gluing and taping!
Grandparents Day
A reminder that all of our lovely grandparents and great grandparents are invited to school next Monday for our annual 'Grandparents Day'. Please return the RSVP slips for Grandparents Day by the end of this week. Mrs Meyer is also putting together a slide show of our grandparents. Please email through your pictures to her on amie.meyer@cewa.edu.au .

Materials and helpers for bug catchers
Good evening parents,
Thank you for all those people who have brought in some materials for their bug catchers.
Thank you for all those people who have brought in some materials for their bug catchers.
We are asking the children to bring in any materials that might be useful for the construction of their own design. Please talk to your child at home about what they would like to collect and bring into school by Friday 22nd June. Any materials that are specifically collected for your child’s own design should be placed in a plastic bag with their name on it. Any materials to be shared can be placed in a bag labelled shared materials.
Some useful materials may include:
- Clean empty jars or containers with lids
- PVC pipe/clear tubing
- Clear plastic milk bottles/juice containers
- Mesh/netting
- Pipe cleaners/string
- Rocks/stones
- Anything else you can think of!
We also require some helpers from 11.20 - 12.30 so if you were able to help construct our bug catchers, we would be very appreciative. Please email me if you can.
Thank you for your ongoing support

Place Value fun in Year One!
During Math time last week, the Year One children learnt about the concept of Place Value.
This relates to the Year One curriculum outcome of :
Recognise, model, read, write and order numbers to at least 100. Locate these numbers on a number line. (ACMNA013)
The children found out that place value means the value of a digit within a number, for example we found out that the number 64 was made up of 6 tens and 4 ones. We even had some very clever people who made some numbers over 1000!
We explored this concept using online games, songs, manipulative materials and then attempted to consolidate our learning with some Mathmatics activities on the iPad.
Below are some photos of the children exploring numbers using MAB's (Multi-based Arithmic Blocks) - the materials you might have used in your time at school! We also played some great place value games in our Math books and we loved expanding our numbers!
We have been learning this great place Value song in class (be careful it really gets in your head) and I said to the children that I would put it on the blog so they could show you.
If you would like to play some of the Place Value games at home, please click on the links below:

I hope you have had a lovely weekend and I will see you tomorrow.
Many thanks

Week 7 Information
Bug Catchers
Over the past few weeks we have planned, designed and labelled a model for our very own bug catcher. The next step will be gathering materials that we need and writing a procedure to make our bug catcher. Over the next 2 weeks, we are asking the children to bring in any materials that might be useful for the construction of their own design. Please talk to your child at home about what they would like to collect and bring into school by Friday 22nd June. Any materials that are specifically collected for your child’s own design should be placed in a plastic bag with their name on it. - Clean empty jars or containers with lids
- PVC pipe/clear tubing
- Clear plastic milk bottles/juice containers
- Mesh/netting
- Pipe cleaners/string
- Rocks/stones
- Anything else you can think of!
See example below:
We will be putting our designs together from 11:30am – 12:30pm on Friday 22nd June. During this time, we are seeking the expertise of a few parent helpers to assist us with construction. If you would like to come along and help please email me or let me know in the classroom.
Think Mentals
Please note that Unit Four in your child’s Think Mental's book is to be completed by next Friday 22nd June (Week 8). Thank you to parents for marking the work as you go and for giving your children feedback as they work through these tasks. From Term 3 onward we will be completing one unit per week.
Sight Words
Sight words remain as an important part of our homework program in Year One. We aim to test each child regularly on the retention (both reading and spelling) of their sight words. Each time your child is tested, we will send home a sheet that outlines words for revision. Please aim to keep up regular practice with these words. It has been so pleasing to see such improvement in the children's reading levels this term and it is really evident that many of the students are recognising their sight words due to continued practice at home and at school. Thank you for your support with this program.
Have a great week!

Tick tock goes the Year One clock!
We have has so much fun learning about time in Year One! We have participated in a variety of hands on activities which help us learn about both digital and analogue clocks. We have especially loved making times on the clock and learning that the big hand points to the minutes and the little hand points to the hours.
The children have played games, used mini clocks to make time and have used the 'telling time' app on the I Pads to explore how we can tell the time.
By the end of Year One, the children are expected to:
The children have also enjoyed playing on the interactive clock and participated in a variety of time games which you can access below:
