Salad making on Thursday 2nd August

Salad Ingredients Wanted!

Dear Parents,

As a part of our Writing program this term we are expanding our knowledge on how to write a procedure. This week,  we will be reading and writing a class recipe for a 'plant' salad. On Thursday 2nd August we plan to make the salad, using ingredients from our own gardens (or fridges). We are asking that each child brings in one or two ingredients of their choice for our class salad on this day. Feel free to bring in from Tuesday and we can store it in the fridge. Donations of lettuce, tomatoes, celery, carrots, fresh herbs, etc are all welcome! We will eat our salad as a recess snack.

(Please feel free to pack a normal recess if you think your child will need something more substantial...or might not like the idea of salad for recess haha)

Thank you for your support.

The Once-Ler REVEAL!

This morning the children came to the door to find that an Australian Once-Ler came to both of the Year One classes and left it an absolute mess with thneeds everywhere! He had cut down some branches and began to knit thneeds! I have alerted Mr. Wilkie and he said he will be in touch with the appropriate authorities.

Thank you to all who brought their children to school for the big reveal! The children were very invested in the quest to catch the Once-Ler and we will begin to map out our Procedure tomorrow.

Have a lovely night

Australian Once-Ler coming to Year One

Good morning Parents,

Tomorrow morning, the classroom will be in a bit of a mess due to the Australian Once-Ler using our classroom for the beginning of it's factory!

In class, we have read the story of the Lorax. I am using this story as the base for our procedure writing unit. I have told the children that the Lorax was one of my favourite books when I was growing up and that it was based on people around the world cutting down trees to make new things. I explained that the Once-Ler (the villain in the story) was responsible for cutting down the trees and making onsie type pieces called thneeds.

I explained that the area we live in would be the perfect place for the Once-Ler to come as we have so many beautiful trees around the Cape....so.... I will be running "late" on Monday morning and I will rush to the door at 8.30am where I will find the classroom covered in branches, thneeds and signs all over the door saying 'keep out'. The Australian Once-Ler will leave a note explaining that he will be back to set up his factory soon.

The premise of this will be that we have to write a procedure titled 'How to get rid of an Australian Once-Ler'. Mr. Wilkie or Mr. Torrese will be on the case on Monday asking the children for some ideas...

Keep an eye on the blog for progress on our procedure unit as the children use hand actions, various vocabulary and learn the structure of a procedure!

Enjoy your Sunday!

Sight word Review

It's that time of the term again where Mrs. Hughes and I will begin testing the children's sight words. If you feel that your child may be ready for their test, please let us know and we will do our best to get them tested within the week.

There are a few children that have moved through their sight word lists quite quickly which is very pleasing, however I have noticed that they are not always applying them into their writing eg. thay for they, wos for was, sum for some etc.

I will be re-testing those children on their first 100 to see what they have retained. I will send home a list of the appropriate words so if you would like to practise them, you can.

Below are the first 200 sight words (Please note that they children need to reach the end of the first 100 by the end of Year One).

If you have any questions or queries, please let me know.

Thank you for your continued support

Assembly Photos

Here are some photos from our wonderful Performance assembly last term. The children absolutely loved performing on stage and their learnt a lot about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture. A huge thank you to all of the Mum's and Dad's who helped with the outstanding costumes and helping to change the children after the assembly.

Welcome Back to Term Three!

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you all had a lovely holiday and the students are feeling refreshed and renewed after their two week break!

What's On This Term?
This term we are looking at a variety of topics and basing these concepts around the children's interests and ideas. We will be asking the children what they would like to learn about  in regards to these topics with a question box at the back of our room. The children always come up with some great ideas to guide their own learning!

Our writing focus this term will look at Procedures as well as Information Reports. Our Maths focus this term will be money, 2D and 3D shapes, measurement (capacity and length), addition and subtraction,  revision of skip counting (2's, 5's, 10's), place value revision and odd and even numbers.

In our HASS subject we will have a focus on things from the past and how children's daily lives differ from those of their parent's or grandparent's childhoods. At the end of the term we are planning a special excursion to explore life in the olden days first hand.

In Science we will be exploring how we can observe changes in the sky and landscape and how this can affect our ability to care for natural, managed and constructed features.

In Visual Arts we will be learning about colour (primary colours and how they mix to form secondary colours). We will experiment with some colour mixing and have a go at creating artworks using complementary colours.
