Learning Journeys
Dear Parents,
On Monday of week 10 (17th of Sept) OLC will be holding a Learning Journey afternoon. This is a open classroom opportunity for you to come into Year 1P with your child after school. You will be invited to have a look around the classroom and the children can show you some of the work they have been doing over the year.
The classroom will be open from 3.30pm - 5.00pm for you to come in at your leisure. I look forward to sharing this wonderful year of work with you and your child.
If you have any queries or questions, please email me.
Many thanks

Mysterious Animal sighted near OLC!
I'm sure by now your children have come home with news of a mysterious animal sighted in Dunsborough. We knew little about this animal but did find out that the man - Greg Normandy sighted an animal that was the size of a dog with orange and white stripes.
See below the newspaper article from the Margaret River Region News
The children have been buzzing with excitement as yesterday the mystery animal made an appearance in the courtyard. Luckily we had some photographers take some photos of the evidence.
We then discovered that out in the wild, there are a number of hybrid animals and that have been given new names such as:
- The Liger (Lion/Tiger)
- The Carma (Camel/Llama)
- Wholphin (Whale/Dolphin)
Below is the link to the video we watched.
Luckily, Mrs. Sherborne and I put our money together and paid for some very important information from National Geographic, which lead to information about a strange animal, called the Trabbit!
Have a read of the information below:
This is the start of our Talk for Write unit into information reports! Get ready for some very creative writing...and animals!
Thanks for all of your support ;)

Update on the Once-Ler
As you may have heard, the children have loved seeing and hearing about the adventures of the Once-Ler over the past four weeks. This has been based around our Talk for Write program where children learn a text type through actions, and then learn to apply the structure of this text type to their writing. We have found various clues around the school (twigs, leaves and I even got a photo of the Once-Ler running away!) which has helped our investigation into getting rid of the Once-Ler for good!
We have looked into the structure of a procedure and have learnt that it is made up of 5 parts including:
- A title
- A goal
- Needs
- Steps
- Check
We have loved building our story map and creating actions to accompany our Once-Ler procedure and I have seen the children's confidence grow when attempting to write their own procedure in class. Some of the titles of the procedures the children have produced include:
- How to get rid of an annoying sister
- How to stop your sister from taking off her nappy
- How to look after a pony
- How to make rainbow slime
We have loved learning about Procedures and we are looking forward to starting our new unit on Information reports next week....Keep an eye out for a mysterious animal lurking in the bushland :)

Last week we made our potion and delivered it to the bushlands near the oval. The children were very excited to see if their potion worked!

Mission Market Madness
On Wednesday the 15th of August OLC celebrated our feast day of the Assumption of Mary. We began the day with a beautiful whole school Mass in the hall, the featured song of 'Gentle woman' was a gorgeous start to our day. We then returned to the class and completed some feast day activities around what our school emblem means and how Mary is a strong focus in our school.
The stalls were then set up for the Mission Markets and I must say...the lucky dip stall was an absolute hit! We sold out very quickly and the children loved all the little stationary and toys that were packed into the bags. Thank you again to all the families who donated things for the lucky dips.
The sun came out and the games, lollies and fun were a massive hit with the children! Here are a few snaps of the children having fun in the sun! The toilet toss and the chocolate throw were very popular games!

Mission Markets
Good Evening Parents,
Mission Markets This Wednesday
Many thanks to our Year 1S and 1P parent helpers who kindly donated their time today to put together our bags for the Year One Lucky Dip stall. Your generous donations were greatly appreciated and I am sure that there will be lots of excitement from the students opening up their mystery bags on Wednesday!
If anyone would like to volunteer to set up our stall and man the stall from 11:30am-12:40pm on Wednesday your help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know by email, or during Gathering Time if you would like to assist with this. The children will enter the hall at approximately 12pm to peruse the market stalls and play the games on offer.
Please pack a small cloth bag for your child to 'shop' with on Wednesday, as their will be second hand items for sale, as well as lots of prizes up for grabs throughout the course of the Mission Market. A small purse or wallet with some change (up to $5 maximum with your child's name on it) will be the best way to carry money.
The children are asked to wear Sports Uniform on this day. All parents are welcome to attend our whole school mass in the morning which will take place in the hall at 9am.
Have a lovely night!

Mission Markets - Week 5
Mission Markets
Our annual OLC Mission Markets are fast approaching (Wednesday 15th August). This year, both Year One classes are running a Lucky Dip stall. We are asking for donations of various small toys, stationery or wrapped lollies/lollipops that can be put into lucky dip bags for the children. If you can get your hands on bulk packs of party toys like parachute men, party glasses, balloons, erasers or pencils this will enable more children to have a chance at our lucky dip stall. Coles, K-Mart and The Reject Shop all have great party sections where you can purchase a variety of these items.
If we could have all donations brought into class by next Monday 13th August it would be much appreciated. Many thanks for your support with our Mission Markets. All funds raised go directly to Caritas to support those in need.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thank you,
Miss Prowse

Operation Christmas Child - Shoebox Appeal
Dear Parents,
Over the next couple of weeks, the Year One children are going to participate in an initiative called 'Operation Christmas Child' which aims to pack a shoebox to give to a child who has never received a gift before. This ties into our school value of Compassion as we are helping less fortunate children in need.
Please see below an example of the provided shoe box for Operation Christmas child:
Your child will be grouped with three other children to contribute and pack the shoebox. The cost to send a shoe box will be $2.50 per child. We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the provided shoebox.
Your child will bring home a note which shows you what kind of items can be sent away in the shoebox. We are asking for all donations to be brought to school by Friday 7th September (end of week 8) please. It is very exciting for the children to share in this initiative which has been a part of the O.L.C. Community for the last 15 years.
Thank you for your support.

Sensational Salad Procedures
On Thursday morning, the Year One children took part in a procedure of how to make salad. The children brought in their delicious salad ingredients and with the help of Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Hayhow, the children got down to work.
The children chose their ingredients for their procedure and worked through the steps to create their Master chef inspired salad. When the children had finished, they came back into class and began to write their procedures which included the five elements of:
- A title
- A goal
- Ingredients
- Steps
- A check
The children loved making their salads and some even enjoyed eating them!
Thank you to everyone who donated delicious salad ingredients. We really appreciate it!
