Sight words and parent interviews

Good evening parents,

Due to swimming lesson last week, the wonderful Mrs. Hughes and I gave the children a week off to review their sight words. This Thursday and Friday, we will attempt to get through the class and test the children on their current sight words. If you think your child is NOT ready, please let us know before Thursday.

Thank you to those people who have made a time to attend the parent interviews. I still have a few people that have not put their names down for a time so please let me know if these times do not suit you.

Thank you for your on going support.

Year One Sun Chime STEM project

In Science, the Year One students have been learning about light and sound. We have learnt about how sound reaches our ears through sound waves and that light is a form of energy that is detected by our eyes.

As a part of our Science Program, the Year One students were asked to create a sun chime to both catch the sunlight and make a pleasant sound when the wind blows.

The children were put into groups of three and began to plan their ideas. They sketched their design and labeled what materials they would use. We then invited some parent helpers in to help us construct our designs. Throughout the construction process, the children showed various communication, reasoning and negotiating skills to design their sun chime as a group.

The rich conversations they engaged in to change and adapt their design created a buzz around the ECC area, which led to individual and creative sun chimes being produced.

Thank you x 1000 to our outstanding parent helpers (and the wonderful Mrs. Hughes) who came in to help us on Friday. You twisting, fixing, gluing and sticking skills were second to none! Another huge thank you to those lovely parents who took home very tricky shells and made little holes in them and provided us with some wonderful resources to make our beautiful sun chimes. We appreciate all the parent help and could not have done it without you!

Here are some of the wonderful pictures of the children creating their sun chimes.

Thank you for your on going support!

Swimming pictures and Parent Interviews for week 8 and 9

Swimming Fun!

Have a look at us!

First day of swimming and we had such a great time! I even had one little girl say " Can we PLEASE go back into the pool?!" I'll ask her again at the end of the week haha!

We hopefully had no mix ups with shirts/shorts/thongs but please make sure all of your children's items are labelled. We will again take our recess to the pool. Please make sure it is in a clearly labelled container and it is quite substantial as I had a few hungry kiddies today! Place it in the lunch order basket at the front of the room :)

I hope your littles ones aren't as tired as I am tonight!

Parent Interviews

In Week 8 and 9 I will begin parent interviews with each family to give you feedback on how your child is progressing in their learning this term. Please pop your name down on the parent interview page that will be outside the classroom on the window, but below the dates and times I will be holding parent interviews.

If you cannot make any of the times, please email me and let me know.

Thank you for your on going support.

Swimming Information for Week 7

Good afternoon parents,

Swimming commences this Monday 18th March to Friday 22nd of March.

We are very lucky to be heading to the pool for the afternoon session leaving OLC at 11.40 am and we will return to OLC by 2.30pm This year the children will have 2 x 40 min lessons within this block, with a 10 min break between each lesson. Within this break, the children will be eating their recess to keep them sustained for the double lesson.

Please bring their towel, goggles and a spare plastic bag (for wet bathers) in either a separate sports bag or plastic bag which will hang outside on their bag hook until our swimming time.

We ask that your child come to school in bathers and sports shoes but pack their thongs in their bag to wear to the pool.

The children will be eating their lunch at recess time and I will be taking them out 15 mins before the bell so they have time to eat it. I would ask that you bring your child's recess in a clearly labelled container and place it in the lunch order basket at the front of the room on Monday.

Please place everything that your child needs (eg. goggles, towel/dressing gown) in a separate swimming bag (plastic or material) along with another plastic bag to put their wet towel and bathers in when they return from swimming at 2.30pm.

If you have any questions, please email me.

Sun chime STEM project for week 8

STEM Project (Monday Week 8)

Over the next two weeks the children in year one will be asked to design a sun chime as a part of our unit in Science related to sound and light.

The children will work in teams of three to plan and design a sun chime (a mixture of a wind chime and a sun catcher). This project will then be hung in the tree in the ECC area and the children will be required to video record their sun chime and then reflect on their design at the end.

I have posted this project a little bit early so you can start collecting materials for your child's design (all help would be appreciated!). We are planning on making the sun chimes on Monday 25th of March (week 8) between 1.30pm and 2.45pm. If you are able to help in any way, we would love you to come in to get on the hot glue gun/ thread some beads!

Below are some of the examples that I will be showing them:

Harmony Day 2019

Harmony Day. March 29th 2019.

Image result for harmony day

Dear Parents,

We need you…..

On the 29th of March the students of Our Lady of the Cape Primary School will celebrate Harmony Day.

It is our aim to support the development of respect and appreciation for cultures other than their own in the students. To do this we would like to immerse the children in a rich variety of experiences that include food, music, visual arts and the development of a knowledge base of the cultural traditions of others.

Information is always best coming from those who have experienced the learning first hand so we are asking parents help out on the day.
We would love parents to lead an activity as part of a rotation between 9am and 11am on the day. There would be no more than 20 children in each group. Each session would last 15 minutes and you would repeat this activity up to 6 six times.
If you were born in another country you may wish to present some photographs, samples of traditional foods, clothing, games etc. and tell the children about how you grew up. How is was different to here… and the same as here.
If you can play a musical instrument you may like to share your skills. The children would love to listen.

Perhaps you can write some great haiku… or fold some tricky origami.
Those of you who teach dance, karate or craft may like to come and share your talents.
Children always love to cook. We would love to have someone making pasta, pizza or some other cultural delight (remembering that you only have 15 minutes).

So… if you can help please email Julie Birch. julie.birch@cewa.edu.au

Many thanks

Book Changing Day

Good afternoon parents,

We have decided as a Year One team that we will be having book changing days on Monday and Wednesday. This means your child will have their book changed every second day. This is to allow your child to read the book the first time (to decode the words) then the second day they should read the story again (to comprehend the story).  We do ask that your child brings their reading file in everyday as sometimes we may have parents on roster that are able to listen to reading and it also gets your child into a good habit of bringing in their reading file everyday.

We encourage you to also use the Comprehension pack that has been sent home every Thursday and should be returned by the following Tuesday to the blue cart located at the front of the room.

If you have any questions, please email me.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
