Our Spiny Leaf bugs need a home for the holidays!

Image result for spiny leaf insect

If there is anyone in the class who will be based in Dunsborough over the holidays and would like a few visitors, we are looking for someone to care for Leaf girl and Stick girl (and friends).

They are very low maintenance and just require some new gum leaves every few days and a spray with the water spray bottle in the class. If you're feeling up to it, please email me and you can take them home in their tank after school tomorrow :)

Thank you

Practicum Teacher - Ms. Susan Radisich

Tomorrow we will have a visit from Ms. Susan Radisich who will be conducting her third year teaching practicum in our class from next term.

We are very lucky to have Susan in our class for 5 weeks beginning Monday 21st of October to Friday 21st of November and we are looking forward to sharing our classroom environment with her.

If you see her tomorrow, please give her a big OLC welcome.

2019 Sports Carnival

On Tuesday 24th of September, OLC held their annual faction carnival.  It was an absolutely beautiful spring day and the children came to school extremely excited to start the carnival!

The children looked outstanding in their coloured zinc, face paint and  coloured hairspray! The excitement continued as the children went into their faction bays and loved joining in with the older children cheering for the team.

I'm not sure, but I think the motivation of lollies from the faction captains might have made the children cheer extra hard. The running races were a great indication of just how fast our year ones are! They would definitely leave me behind in the 50m sprint!

The team games were a hit and I think one of the favourites of the day had to be 'stone, bridge, tree' and the flag relay!

Congratulations to our runner up champion boy Keenan and our champion boy Jobe and our runner up champion girls Kate and Zoe H and champion girl Ayva.

A big thank you to all the parents who helped with the event coordination, the set up and pack up and a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Sinclair for the wonderful day she put together.

Wonnerup house Excursion 2019

On Friday the 20th of September, the Year One children went on an excursion to Wonnerup house. The children were very excited to be in their 'Olden Day' clothes and loved comparing the clothing from the Olden Days to today. We hopped on the bus and although there were a lot of 'are we there yet?' questions, the children were excited to be going to visit 'the old place where you had to go work on the farm instead of go to school' - as quoted by one of the children.

We started the excursion with a 15 minute video about the history of Wonnerup House to which we found out that the whole community burnt down and had to be rebuilt! We also learnt about the Layman Family who lived at Wonnerup House amongst the beautiful Tuart Forest that surrounds the property.

We then set off in our groups with our wonderful parent helpers and started to explore the amazing grounds. We visited The Main House, The Black Smith shop, The Stables and The Dairy Kitchen . The children loved learning about all the olden day items like the wash board, the chamber pot, the Grandfather clock and many more!

One of the favourite places of the day was the old school house. I must say, I didn't mind getting into character! The children explored the old classroom and also the house where the teacher used to live. She must have had a LOT of hobbies to fill in her time!

We would like to thank our parent helpers from both Year One classes who made the day possible by meeting us at Wonnerup House and showing the children around the property. This excursion would not have been possible without you!

Week 10 Information

Welcome to week 10...we did it!

We have had such a wonderful term and I can't believe I only have one more term with your beautiful children :( I know I am not going to cope at the end of the year!

Just a few things for this week...

Open Classroom

Tonight is your chance to come and check out the work your child has been doing throughout the year. It starts in the hall at 5pm, where Mr Lee will welcome us and some students will carryout a short musical performance. Classrooms will then be open from 5.15-6pm for you share in celebrating your child's achievements.

Please remember that this is a special time to spend with your child to discuss what they have enjoyed learning, and not a time to discuss any issues with the teacher. I am happy to make a separate appointment to do this, where needed. I look forward to seeing you tonight.

Athletics Carnival

Please note that the athletics carnival is tomorrow. The events schedule was emailed out to all parents last Friday, see the office if you have not received this.

It is looking to be a beautiful sunny day, therefore it is important that your child has had sunscreen applied in the morning before coming to school. We will have some on hand in the tents as well. As usual your child is to come to school in their faction uniform with their hat, water bottle and food in their school bag.

The children are welcome to wear face paint and bring teddies so that they can cheer for their team.

The canteen will be doing a sausage sizzle ($3) for lunch, however you need to place an order at the canteen with the correct change and their faction labelled on the bag. Parents can purchase one on the day.  Tea/coffee and cake will also available for purchase on the day for $5.

If you would like to take your child home after the carnival, you will need to fill in a form found in the front office. You or anyone else, will not be able to take your child if I am not given this form. Thank you to those would have brought theirs in already.

Church this Friday

All parents are welcome to come along and celebrate the end of term Thanksgiving Mass. We will be walking down to the church together and you are most welcome to join us.

Change of Literacy Block  Routine

In accordance with our original plans of support for the Preprimary Year One split this year, Mrs Sorgiovanni will reduce her support time for Year One in Term Four. Now that the Preprimaries are reading and writing and follow routines comfortably they will be included in the PLD spelling groupings along with the rest of the Year ones and twos. Preprimaries and Year Ones will rotate through writing activities and Mrs Birch will participate in Year One guided reading sessions while the Preprimaries enjoy their outdoor education programme with Mrs Leahy and the Education Assistants.
We thank Mrs Sorgiovanni for being a very important part of Year One English Learning this year.

Keep an eye on the blog for our amazing write up from our Wonnerup House visit :)

Wonnerup House Excursion

The time has come for our excursion!

The children are very excited and we are hoping that the weather God's will look after us tomorrow! Just a few things for the day:

Parent helpers, we shall see you at Wonnerup house at 10.30am - I think some lovely people have offered to carpool to the excursion together.

Come dressed in your best 'olden days' clothes (if the children are willing to) and that is also including parents :)

Please bring your child's lunch, recess and water bottle in a small reusable/green bag with their name somewhere on it. We will have sip and crunch before we head onto the bus so please bring this in as normal.

We should hopefully be back to OLC by 1.45pm/2.00pm at the latest.

Many thanks for your continued support

Miss Prowse and Mrs. Birch

Week 9 Information

Image result for keep calm and be kind

Good evening Parents,

We are almost there! Not long to go until the end of term...I cannot believe it! The children are getting tired BUT I am encouraging them to think of others and just be kind to one another :)

Just a few reminders this week...

Sports Carnival
The Sports Carnival has changed from Thursday of this week to Tuesday of next week (24th of Sept) due to inclement weather. Hopefully we will have a sunny day and be ready to rock and roll on Tuesday!

Wonnerup House

We are very excited for our visit to Wonnerup house this Friday! Hopefully the weather Gods will look after us and give us a nice sunny day! I have everyone's permission slips (well done everyone!) and the children have loved learning about the 'olden days' in class. It will be a dress up day but please feel free to go very simple in the costume department.  Thank you to all those who volunteered to come and help. I will contact you via email this week with information on where we will meet you.

Sight words

Last week both Year One classes took part in a sight word review. All the children were tested on the first 100 words to see what they have retained or to see what words they already know (if they have not reached the last set of 25 words). This week, the children will not be tested on their words but be given their review words to take home and practise. Please take some time to go over these with your children as this may mean they have not retained previous words they have learnt. If you have any concerns, please email me.

Mental Maths
This will be the last week of Mental Maths for Term 3 (Unit 17). The children have loved their weekly challenge and it has certainly helped their number attack skills within our in class maths program.

Children away in Week 10
If any families are sneaking away to an early family holiday (very jealous) or work commitment which prevents your child from attending school in week 10, could you please email me ASAP and let me know the dates as we are attempting some reading and maths assessments in the last few days of term.

If there are any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me.

Many thanks

Week 8 Information

Here we are at week 8!

Only three weeks to go...but who is counting?!

Just a few messages this week...

Throws carnival

Tomorrow at 11.20am, the Year One students will be having their throws carnival, the last event before the athletics carnival next Thursday. Please make sure that your child is dressed in their sports uniform with their faction shirt tomorrow. Everyone is welcome to come along :)

Excursion notes

Thank you to all of those people that have handed in their permission slips over the last few days, if you have not done so, please hand it in ASAP and if you need another one, please let me know.

Shoebox items

Keep bringing in those items and the $2.50 for your shoeboxes. The children have loved seeing the different videos of where their shoeboxes might be going and we will be completing a special 'about me' page to put in the box when it heads overseas. Please remember, we are not allowed to send toothpaste, food items, playing cards or anything that can melt as it will not be accepted by the company.

OLC Open Evening

On the final Monday of term (23rd of September), from 5-6pm, we will be holding our Learning Journey to share the rich learning that has taken place in classes this term. If parents assemble in the hall at 5pm, there will be a short welcome and musical presentation. All parents are then free to walk through the classrooms to look at their child's work and art displays.

Family Mass

Thank you to all the families that attended our Mass on Saturday. The children were absolutely beautiful and many of the Parishioners mentioned how well reverent and respectful the children were. A big thank you to Mrs. Hughes who organised the pizzas, Mrs. Horrocks for the music and Mrs. Meyer for leading the Mass.

Jumps Champions

What an absolutely beautiful morning for the jumps day. I was looking out the window from my bedroom, wishing I was there and the gorgeous Emma sent through these photos of the children!

Congratulations to the jumps winners:

Girls: Ayva, Kate, Zoe H, Sienna and Emme

Week 7 Information

Good afternoon parents,

I'm writing this at home with a raging virus so please forgive me if I do forget anything! I'm hoping to be back at school some time this week but my body and my brain are thinking two different things at this stage!

Year One Jumps Carnival

On Thursday of this week, the children will be taking part in their jumps event which will count towards their faction carnival points for the main event in Week 9. All the Year One students will be jumping from 10.00am down near the long jump pit on the oval, so if you would like to come and watch or help we would love to see you!

Family Mass

Just a reminder that we have a Year One family Mass this Saturday. Everyone is welcome - even if you are not Catholic as it is a special time to come together as a year group as well as to enjoy some pizza provided by the P & F. Mass begins at 6pm and if you can make it, please let me know as I will arrange some special jobs for the children attending :)

School Photos

On Thursday the 12th of September, we have our annual OLC school photos. As this is normally our sports day, we are asking that the children come dressed in their full winter uniform (including their jumpers) and depending on your child's surname, they may have their family photos too. More information about family photos will be sent out via text message.

Excursion  to Wonnerup house

This week a permission letter will go home about our upcoming excursion to Wonnerup House on Friday 20th of September (Week 9). In HASS, we have been learning about school and home life in the olden days and our visit to Wonnerup House will give us a first hand look at what life was like in the past. For a bit of fun on the excursion day, we plan to dress up as children of the past, similar to the examples below. This however, is not compulsory.

We will enjoy morning tea and lunch at the venue and have our fingers crossed for a lovely day of sunshine. Please keep an eye out for the permission note in your children's bags later this week. We will also be looking for parent helpers to meet us at Wonnerup House on the day to assist with group activities. Please email me if you are interested, or fill out your interest in the letter and we will get back to you with confirmation.

I think that is it, for now. Please keep an eye on the blog incase there are any last minute updates.

Thank you for your ongoing support

Miss Prowse
