Year One and Two Excursion to The Old Butter Factory

Today the Year One and Two students went on an excursion to The Old Butter Factory in Busselton. We were all very excited in the morning and were all smiles on the bus and we were very excited when we got off the bus to The Old Butter Factory.

We got into our groups with our fantastic parent helpers and we set off to explore the Factory. We loved seeing all the olden day items and we found lots of things on our scavenger hunt. We got to look at all the olden day washing machines, an old hair dryer, a record player and even saw some olden day irons.

We got to explore a telephone exchange, a medic hut, an original settlement house and I think the best place, an olden day school house. The children had a wonderful time role playing being a child in the olden days and enjoyed sitting at the desks and using the slate boards. Funnily enough they were very interested to know where the cane was!

Another highlight for the children was the olden days toilet or "dunny". There was a few children that wanted to try it out...it got a bit smelly!

After the excursion, we walked to Rotary Park to have lunch and enjoy the sunshine. The children loved playing on the new playground!

After lunch and play, We got to play some old fashioned games. We had an egg and spoon race, played snakes and ladders, tripped over in the three-legged-race, jumped out of our shoes in a sack race and moved our bodies with some hula hoops!

We had a wonderful day learning about things from the past. Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers: Louise, Gemma, Shaun, Michelle Kerr, Michelle Hughes and Prue. The day ran so smoothly with all of you!

Hopefully your little ones weren't too tired this evening!

See you all tomorrow!

Grandparents Day at OLC!

We had a fantastic day today celebrating Grandparents day in the Year One classroom. It was very busy first up this morning and we got straight into our activities.

We enjoyed playing some board games, doing some painting, creating a collage on the iPads, having a kick around with the ball and doing some skipping, reading and drawing and finally conducting a grandparent interview where we had to ask a series of questions about when our grandparents were young.

Did you know Matt Dollison went to school in a rocket? Most of the children were very surprised too!

It was a great morning that the children got to spend with either their grandparents, their Mum and Dad and in some cases a neighbour which was a wonderful treat for all. Thank you to all the grandparents that adopted a few extra grandchildren today, all of the children had a wonderful morning learning with you.

A few photos below that show just how special our Grandparents are to us!

Year One goes to the theatre!

Today the Year One children went to the hall to watch the Year 5 and 6 children perform the school production of Aladdin. We were so impressed with the performance that I heard many children say "that was the best show ever!" And I certainly agreed with them and I am so excited to see the entire performance on Thursday and Friday night. Here are a few sneak preview pictures from the performance. Make sure you have bought your tickets as it's going to be a fantastic show!

Year One parent helpers for excursion

Good evening lovely parents,

Next Monday the 29th of July, the Year One and Year Two children will be going on an excursion to The Old Butter Factory in Busselton and we are looking for 4 parent volunteers to help escort the children around the factory as well as help with some olden style games (weather permitting) at the Lions park. I'm sure there are lots of wonderful volunteers that would love to be involved so the fairest way to do this is to please email me if you would like to come along and I will pull 4 names out of a hat.

If you are selected, unfortunately we can't take you on the bus but we would require you to meet us there at around 10.30am. If this is something you would like to be involved in please email me by Tuesday afternoon as I need to organise the group numbers with Mrs. Murphy.

Many thanks and see you all tomorrow!

Year One gets a visit from the dentist!

On Thursday of week 11, Mrs. Martin organised a very special visitor to come in and talk to the Year One's about the importance of brushing their teeth.

Dr. Dan O'Leary and Sarah O'Leary came in to talk to the children about the sugars in our food, how to brush our teeth properly and what happens when we don't brush our teeth properly....I heard the pictures were "very scary" and "gross" from a couple of the students. Hopefully this will encourage a few more children to take more care when brushing their teeth!

All of the children received a little goodie bag which included some stickers, a toothbrush and some toothpaste. A big thank you to Mrs. Martin for organising the special visit!

Here are a few pictures of the children brushing their teeth.

Fun with measurement!

In class, the year one children have been participating in various measurement activities. We have used informal units such as unifix cubes, MAB blocks and wooden cubes to measure things around the room. We also got to measure ourselves today!

We partnered up and we had to do some estimating of how many unifix cubes, MAB's or wooden cubes it would take to reach the length of our bodies. We had some pretty close guesses and some guesses that made us really think about the size of the materials we were using.

This measurement activity provided the Year One children with a hands on real life experience with measuring which was also a lot of fun! This relates to the Measurement Outcome of:

Measure and compare the length and capacities of pairs of objects using uniform informal units (ACMMG019)

Here are some photos of our learning!

Keep an eye on the blog for information about an up coming excursion and a visit from Bunnings (some helpers might be needed!)

See you all tomorrow
