Your snails are needed!

Good afternoon parents,

Tomorrow for Science we will be looking at snails - how the move, what they look like and where they live. If you have any snails at home, could you please bring them to school tomorrow for our Science lesson. We would love to have a hands on experience with our slimy friends.

The Year 1P Assembly was a hit!

On Friday the 27th of May Year 1P had their performance assembly. The children were extremely excited as soon as they came to school in the morning and the children's costumes looked absolutely amazing!

We began with sharing some interesting facts about mini beast - some of them were a bit disgusting!

We when moved into the Eric Carle classic the Very Grouchy Lady bird. The children did a wonderful job of both reading and acting! They remembered every line and most of them without looking!

After our wonderful play, the children took part in a 'time' song which taught us about the hands on the clock and what they meant. The dancers at the front were very energetic!

We absolutely loved sharing our learning with the school and I was so proud of these wonderful children (who are all under 7) for remembering their places, lines and for being all round superstars!

Thank you to all the parents for your support in learning parts and making outstanding costumes! You are very much appreciated!

Assembly and Sight Words

Good evening parents,

This is just one last reminder that our assembly is tomorrow and it begins at 9.05am. We are extremely excited and had a great practise today! I would ask that the children come to school in their costume tomorrow and also come with their sports uniform in their bag to change into after assembly. We can't wait to show you what we have been learning about!

Sight Words

I would just like to write a quick note to let you know about the sight words as some parents have been a bit confused with the sight word assessment sheets.

Each child in Year One is required to learn the first 100 Diana Rigg sight words by the end of Year. Every 3 weeks the children will be retested to see if they have mastered both reading and spelling the sight word rings that they keep in their reading file. Out of the 25 sight words on each ring, the children are allowed to get no more than 2 wrong (both reading and spelling) before they receive the next set.

This is an example of the assessment sheet we complete at school.

As you can see, 'Little Johnny' has spelt three words wrong therefore he has not passed the sight word assessment.

Little Johnny then receives the note below with a copy of his written words with the words he spelt incorrectly. This can then be used as a starting point to practise at home.

Please let me know if there are any questions or queries and email me at prowse.monique@cathednet.wa.edu.au

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Year 1P gets foodie!

Throughout Term Two, the Year One students will be participating in the OLC food garden project. On Thursday, we were very lucky to have Mrs. Kerr and Mrs. Mc Ginley to come in and help get our hands dirty by planting some broad bean seeds. To start our project, we had a discussion about what our seeds needed to grow and what we needed to do to take care of them. The children came up with water, sunshine, shade, soil and of course love to keep our little plants going!

We also looked at the life cycle of a broad bean and spoke about the part of the life cycle that we would be starting today.

We then went outside and used our newspaper planters, (Mrs. Drmota, Mr. Rogan and Mrs. Kerr again)  put on our gardening gloves and we filled them with soil. We then got one of our heritage broad bean seeds and planted them into our soil. It was a bit tricky for some of the children in our class as the pots were very delicate!

After planting our seeds, we came inside and completed an activity which broke the broad bean life cycle into 6 stages. The children were very clever completed the activity with ease.

Watch this space to see how our beans are going!

Food Garden Volunteers

Good afternoon parents,

We are looking to start our Food Garden bean plants this week and would love if any parents could come in and help make the newspaper pots to plant our bean seeds into. We would also require some assistance to put the seeds into the soil.

We will require a few parents on Wednesday morning (18th May) from 8.50am - 9.15 am to help construct the newspaper pots in the wet area.

Thursday will be our planting day. If you could assist with this from 9.05am - 9.30 am approx. that would be very helpful. Some hands might get dirty - but we have soap :)

If you are able to assist with either Wednesday or Thursday morning, after drop off, please email me.

We are looking forward to growing some delicious broad beans!

Mini Beasts are taking over Year 1P

We have had a very bug-tastic week this week in Year 1P!

We have been learning about mini beasts in Science and on Tuesday we went on a Insect Safari!

We worked in teams of 3 and in each team we had a Communications Officer (the person who communicates with the teacher), a Safari Sargent (the person who directs the team) and a Bug patrol and digger (the person who gets their hands dirty and looks in the bushes and dirt for bugs!). We had to carefully look for insects around our school and look at the environments in which they live.

Here are some pictures of our Safari!

As well as looking at mini beasts in Science, we have also been exploring non-fiction texts within our Literacy session. We have learnt about different text features within a non fiction text which include contents pages, titles, headings and labelled diagrams.

We have read books about Caterpillars and Butterflies and have used the information to create our own explosion charts, KWL charts and Caterpillar reports. We even had some time to create some caterpillar art!

I have been blown away with some of the writing that the children have been producing and I am so proud of the comprehension strategies that they have been implementing in their work.

We are very clever scientists in Year One!

Think Mental Math books

Good evening parents,

Thank you for all of those people who made sure their children handed in and completed the first unit of their Think Mental Math books on Friday. If for some reason they did not get to me by last Friday, could you please hand them in ASAP.

It was great to see all of the children's math understanding represented in their Think Mental's Math book. Some children also completed the second unit with great eagerness. However I would like to ensure the concepts are taught adequately in class so please refrain from letting your child complete more than the set amount.

It's not very often the teacher has to ask children to stop doing homework :)

This next fortnight (Weeks 4 and 5) the children are required to complete Unit 2 ONLY. It will be due back to class on Friday 27th of May.

In conjunction with the Think Mental Math books, the children are also encouraged to complete:

- Reading every night - to help their fluency and comprehension
- Sight words - to be able to both read and spell them
- Mathletics tasks - set according to the concept we are learning
- Reading Eggs activities - set in relation to their reading level and spelling group

We are learning lots in Year One and we thank you for your ongoing support!

Camp Fun Run

On Friday afternoon, the whole school participated in the Camp Fun Run! We were extremely excited to get started and had our water bottles at the ready. We were lucky that the rain held out for us and we were able to have a wonderful run.

We each had a stamp chart which we got stamped after every lap and we couldn't imagine that some people would reach 34 laps! We grooved along to some great music and at the end got a wonderful icy pole from the P and F.

A big thank you to Sally Gray, Peter McClenaughan and Jodie Spencer who were our expert stampers during the event.

We had a wonderful time raising money for our Year Six students.

If you have not already, could you please bring in your Fun Run money and form. If you have misplaced your form, please head into the office to grab another one.

Thank you for your ongoing support

Important information for Term 2

Dear Parents,

Just a few quick reminders of some important dates throughout Term 2.

The Camp Fun Run is this Friday. It begins at 1.30pm and will go for approximately 45mins-1 hour. If there are any parents that would like to help volunteer on the day stickering/stamping children from our class as they complete the laps, could you please let me know ASAP via email or in person.

Pupil Free Day is in week 5 (Monday the 23rd of May) as we have a Staff Professional Development day.

Year 1P Performance Assembly will be moved from week 4 due to the Year 5/6 children being on camp so will now be scheduled for Friday 27th May. Please put this date in your diaries as we would love to show you some of the learning we have been doing this year.

The Public Holiday WA Day will be on Monday Week 7 (June 6th) so there will be no school on this day also.

Grandparents day will be on Wednesday the 29th of June. We would love to see as many Grandparents at school as possible as it is always a very special time for them to share with their grandchildren. More information will be given closer to the date but please write this date down in your diary!

The parent roster has gone up outside our classroom this week and we would love to see you for our Literacy block!

We are also trying to get our Food Garden up and running however, it needs a de-clutter and a clean up so if any parents have a green thumb that would like to help out, we would love to have you on board. Please email me or see me personally if you are able to help out with this wonderful community project!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Putting numbers in their Place!

During Math time last week, the Year One children learnt about the concept of Place Value.

This relates to the Year One curriculum outcome of :

Recognise, model, read, write and order numbers to at least 100. Locate these numbers on a number line. (ACMNA013)

The children found out that place value means the value of a digit within a number, for example we found out that the number 64 was made up of 6 tens and 4 ones. We even had some very clever people who made some numbers over 500!

We explored this concept using online games, songs, manipulative materials and then attempted to consolidate our learning with some Mathletics activities.

Below are some photos of the children exploring numbers using MAB's (Multi-based Arithmic Blocks) and pop stick bundles - the materials you might have used in your time at school!

We had some very clever Mathematicians that loved showing their work!

We even applied our knowledge of place value to some board games which we glued into our Math scrap book.

I have also added links to some of the games we played below and a fun song about ones, tens and hundreds which we loved singing!

Place Value Fruit Shoot Game

Splat Square

Place Value Song

I have assigned some Place Value tasks on Mathletics for your child to complete to consolidate some of the learning we are doing in class.

Have a lovely night
