Would You Like A Pet Silkworm?

Over the last few weeks 1R and 1P have been looking after silk worms. They have loved feeding the silkworms and watching them grow.  As the silk worms have grown they have become too big and we need to re-home a few. If your child would like to take a silkworm home to have as a pet, they can bring in a jar or shoe box to school. All they need to look after the silkworms is a container preferably a cardboard box and lots of mulberry leaves. This website has lots of information on how to look after silkworms.

Data Delight!

This week the children in Year 1P have been learning how to read, analyse and interpret data. When we first began out unit, we looked at our learning intentions and success criteria. This helped us to understand what data was and how we know we are successful when we represent, analyse and interpret it. Here is an example of our learning.

We then talked about ways we can gather data and we found the best way was to ask questions to find an answer. After this discussion we got down to the fun stuff...analysing data from an m&m packet. The children had to first estimate how many m&m' s were  in the packet and then they used tally marks to represent the colours of each of the m&m's. The children then had to represent their tallies in a bar graph and give it a title, labels on the side and bottom and then analyse their data by answering questions.

The children loved this activity and found it extra delicious! Here are some photos of their findings.

The children have also looked at random data and how they can analyse it in a picture graph. The children were asked to roll a dice with different coloured cars on it. The aim of the game was to see which coloured car would win the race to the end. It was interesting for us to find that no one's picture graph was the same! Here are some pictures of us playing our data race game :)

We have loved learning about Data!

Fairytales and math learning come together!

So far this term the Year One children have been exploring the writing and story structure of fairytales. So far, we have looked at the stories of Little Red Riding hood and Jack and the beanstalk.

We have also been learning about data in Maths and how we can ask a question and then we can collect information about that question. Today these two concepts came together and we were able to formulate a question - 'What is your favourite fairy tale?'. The children have been exposed to both picturegraphs and bar graphs so together as a class, we came up with the best way to represent our data.

First the children talked to each other and discussed their fairytales and which ones they liked. The children then received a small piece of paper and we drew a picture of their favourite fairytale, the title and then their name. We collated our data, put it onto our picture graph and reviewed our results. We found out that the 'other fairytales' was the most popular in our class.

We loved formulating questions about our data and then talking about it together.

Prac Student Tanya Harte

Good afternoon parents,

Please read a little bit about our new ECU practicum student who will be starting in our class next week :)

Hello my name is Tanya Harte,

I am a second year Primary Education student at Edith Cowan University.  Starting Monday I will be coming into 1P to participate in a Teaching Practicum for 4 weeks.  I have lived in Dunsborough for almost 2 years now and love being so close to the beach.

I currently work as a special needs education assistant in Busselton which I absolutely love.  My passion is all things Music.  I completed a Diploma in music at WA Academy of Performing Arts and my dream is to become a primary school music teacher when I finish my degree.  I can play the Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone and love to sing as well.

Hopefully I will get a chance to have some fun with Music over the next 4 weeks while I'm at Our Lady Of The Cape.  I can't wait to meet all of you and the fun we are going to have

Tanya Harte

I Hope you have a lovely weekend and enjoy this sunshine!

Good Afternoon Parents,

I hope you all had a lovely holiday with your children over the past two weeks. We certainly had some exciting holiday news to share with each other this morning!

Here are a few things to not as we commence Term Four of Year One.

Think Mentals/Homework
Next Friday 20th October units 17 and 18 are due to be completed in the Think Mentals book. Sight words and home readers are continuing as a part of our homework program in Term Four. Please remember to note each text that your child reads in their reading logs to avoid the same readers going home multiple times.

Please see below for a timetable of when Think Mentals are due:

Prac Student
Next week we will have Mrs. Tanya Harte commencing her four week teaching prac in our classroom. The Year Ones already had a visit from Mrs. Harte last term. Stay tuned for more information about Mrs. Harte on our upcoming blog posts.

Rosters
The news roster for Term 4 went home today and our Parent Help Roster is up on the pin up board outside the classroom. Due to Mrs. Harte being here from weeks 2-5 we are not requesting parent help until week 6 of this term.

Please see below for the news roster if yours has gone walk abouts :)

Assembly
Year 1R and 1P are coming together to present a Prayer Assembly on Friday 20th October (week 2). By the end of this week, some children will have reading parts to practice in their homework folders. Your assistance with helping at home is much appreciated!

Absentee Notes
Since last term, I have been collating absentee notes (a very fun job) but I may have either missed or not received some notes from people so I will be sending some absentee follow ups home during the week. If you could please sign these and bring them back to school ASAP, that would make my day :)

Have a great first week!
