Fairytales and math learning come together!

So far this term the Year One children have been exploring the writing and story structure of fairytales. So far, we have looked at the stories of Little Red Riding hood and Jack and the beanstalk.

We have also been learning about data in Maths and how we can ask a question and then we can collect information about that question. Today these two concepts came together and we were able to formulate a question - 'What is your favourite fairy tale?'. The children have been exposed to both picturegraphs and bar graphs so together as a class, we came up with the best way to represent our data.

First the children talked to each other and discussed their fairytales and which ones they liked. The children then received a small piece of paper and we drew a picture of their favourite fairytale, the title and then their name. We collated our data, put it onto our picture graph and reviewed our results. We found out that the 'other fairytales' was the most popular in our class.

We loved formulating questions about our data and then talking about it together.
