Week 2 Information
Good evening parents,
It has been great to get back into the classroom with the children after the holidays! We have been learning lots of new things and we are looking forward to a very BIG term of fun!
A few pieces of information for this week...and this term:
Our Learning
There were lots of amazing designs and some that even came with a hand designed disco balls! We had a great time creating and designing our bug catchers!
Minute to win it - A unit on Time
We have has so much fun learning about time in Year One! We have participated in a variety of hands on activities which help us learn about both digital and analogue clocks. We have especially loved making times on the clock and learning that the big hand points to the minutes and the little hand points to the hours.
The children have played games, used mini clocks to make time and have used the 'telling time' app on the I Pads to explore how we can tell the time. The highlight of our unit on time was when we participated in a variety of 'Minute to win it' activities where we rotated through various activities and had 60 seconds to complete them! The children loved working together as a team and learning about the importance of time!
I hope you have a wonderful week and enjoy this amazing sunshine!

A few pieces of information for this week...and this term:
Sight words
This week, the children will be tested on their sight-words on either Wednesday or Friday as the outstanding Mrs. Hughes will be attending our Inter school cross country. I know that many of the children have been practising over the holidays, which is wonderful!
Targeting Mental Maths
This week we are up to unit 10 for our Maths focus. Please try not to let your child go ahead as I like to keep track of their progress each week :)

Welcome Mass:
This Sunday, we will be having the first Mass lead by Father Francis. If you would like to join Fr Francis for his first mass at OLTSC this Sunday morning at 9am, we would love to see you there.
Champion Life:
We have started using a new physical fitness and mental well being application called Champion Life. This has been a great addition to the class room, along with our GoNoodle program where the children can participate in challenges presented by professional athletes, role models and every day people who are the best in their field of expertise.
Parent Roster
Our Parent roster is now up outside our classroom, please feel free to pop your name down to help out in class from 8.45-11.00am.
Excursion
Keep your eyes on the blog for an exciting excursion happening in week 9 of this term :)
Science - Bug Catchers
Last term, the children participated in a STEM project of creating a bug catcher using recyclable materials. After weeks of planning and designing their own creations, the children were delighted to be able to finally put their ideas into action! We are very thankful for all of our hands on parent helpers who gave up part of their day to sticky tape, hot glue and assist with refining the Year 1's designs. The project would not have happened without you!

Welcome back to Term Three!
Welcome back to term three!
Welcome back to Term three! I hope you all had a lovely holiday and the students are feeling refreshed and renewed after their two week break!
What's On This Term?
This term we are looking at a variety of topics and basing these concepts around the children's interests and ideas. We will be asking the children what they would like to learn about in regards to these topics with a question box at the back of our room. The children always come up with some great ideas to guide their own learning!
Our writing focus this term will look at Procedures as well as Information Reports. Our Maths focus this term will be money, 2D and 3D shapes, measurement, addition and subtraction word problems, fractions, revision of skip counting (2's, 5's, 10's), place value revision and odd and even numbers.
In our HASS subject we will have a focus on things from the past and how children's daily lives differ from those of their parent's or grandparent's childhoods. At the end of the term we are planning a special excursion to explore life in the olden days first hand.
In Science we will be exploring how materials can be used for different purposes and how they can change by either heating or cooling them. Get read for some super fun experiments this term!
In Visual Arts we will be learning about colour (primary colours and how they mix to form secondary colours). We will experiment with some colour mixing and have a go at creating artworks using complementary colours.
Targeting Mental Maths
Please continue to work with your child on each unit, giving them instant feedback by marking their work when they have finished is a wonderful way work with your child to see how they are going with their maths understanding. Please highlight or circle any questions that your child may have found a little tricky and I can write this down to review with them at a later date.

Information for our Assembly
Good morning parents,
Just a quick reminder about our assembly tomorrow. If they children could come to school in their costumes, that would be very much appreciated. If the children could bring their sports uniform in a seperate bag to get changed into after the assembly, that would also be very helpful.
Bug Catchers
What a wonderful way to wrap our Science unit on mini-beasts! Thank you so much to all of our parent helpers, we would not have been able to get it done without you! More pictures and info to come!
Sickness
There have been a few children that have gone home sick with colds, vomiting or fevers. We are being very vigilant at school about washing hands, but if your child is sick the Health Departments requires a 24 hour quarantine period to prevent spread of germs. Hopefully we will hang in there for two more days!
Thank you for your ongoing support

PLD Spelling Review
It's that time of the year again where we are testing the children's spelling sounds to see what they have learnt since the beginning of the term. This Wednesday the children will be having their end of term spelling review. If you would like to practise some sound with your children, the table of sounds are below. Your child should know what group they are in, otherwise please email me if they are unsure.
If you have any questions, please let me know :)

Cross Country Stars!
Despite being a wild, wet and windy day, I was so proud of all the children who participated in our Cross Country last Thursday! We all showed such amazing adversity even when faced with an 'extra lap' for the boys and some slippery conditions for the girls!
Congratulations to Jett, Keenan and Jobe for the boys amazing effort and to Sienna and Kate for the holding up the girls! You all did an amazing job!
