Parents...I need your help...
With the outrages success of our 'Disgusting sandwich' procedure given to us by the old Lighthouse keeper Mike Timms (See the display outside our class) the class will be receiving another letter from Mike Timms about the mysterious and endangered Sharkgull!
THEY HAVE NOT SEEN A PICTURE OF THIS STRANGE ANIMAL YET :)
Now as this animal is so endangered, it cannot (and should not) be googled with little eyes around as it will ruin the magic! The children will be receiving a special National Geographic Information report from Mike Timms which will be our introduction for our unit on Information Reports, our next 5 week writing unit.
Please reassure your children that the animal cannot be found on the internet and that they will see it soon if they come home excited for what is to come.
Thank you

Week 6 Information
Dear Parents,
Welcome to week 6! It's been a big few weeks in the OLC calendar and the next few will (hopefully) be a little less busy!
Just a few messages for this week...
Mental Maths
We are currently up to unit 14 (due this Friday) for our Mental Maths books. I am loving how the some of the children feel so confident when they bring in their books each week! If there is anything that your child finds difficult or challenging, please write it into the book at that particular question and I will endeavour to review it with them in class.
Fathers Day Breakfast Friday 30th August
The time has come to celebrate our Dads with a delicious breakfast...if you can please make sure that you have sent your RSVP to your class rep for Friday's breakfast...it begins at 7am!
Meelup Free Dress
On Friday 30th August all students in Meelup can come in free dress for the day as they have won the token count for the first 5 weeks of term. Well done to Meelup!
Operation Christmas Child
Over the next couple of weeks, the Year One children are going to participate in an initiative called 'Operation Christmas Child' which aims to pack a shoebox to give to a child who has never received a gift before. This ties into our school value of Compassion as we are helping less fortunate children in need.
Your child will be grouped with three other children to contribute and pack the shoebox. The cost to send a shoe box will be $2.50 per child. We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the provided shoebox.
Please see below an example of the provided shoe box for Operation Christmas child:
Over the next few days, your child will bring home a note which shows you what kind of items can be sent away in the shoebox. We are asking for all donations to be brought to school by Friday 13th September (end of week 8) please. It is very exciting for the children to share in this initiative which has been a part of the O.L.C. Community for the last 16 years.
There is no need to bring in shoe boxes, as we have been kindly donated them from The Samaritans Purse.
Year One Family Mass
On Saturday the 7th of September, all the children in Year One are invited to attend a class family Mass hosted by Father Francis at Our Lady of the Southern Cross Church at 6pm. We are very lucky that we have a pizza dinner donated by the P&F to be enjoyed after the Mass. Please email me to let me know if you are able to make it as there some little jobs I would love the children to be involved in.
Keep an eye on the blog for some of our Science and Maths learning over the next couple of days!
Thank you for your ongoing support

Mission Markets 2019
Our Feast day began with a beautiful Mass hosted by Father Francis. We walked down to the church and learnt a beautiful new song about kindness and love using sign language. The children were so reverent and respectful and I was so impressed with the guidance they were given from their Year Six buddies.
Thank you to all of those parents who donated, helped prepare and helped serve at this year's mission markets! We made a massive $1700 in total for the day and the children had an absolute ball! I loved seeing the bigger children care for our Year One's!
The mixed media mural of Mary that will go up in the Library will be a beautiful addition to the space.
The afternoon consisted of various rotations of mindfulness colouring, go noodle, box construction, balloon racing, dodge ball and bracelet making...just to name a few. The kindness between all the children was an amazing sight to see.
Thank you again for making this Year's mission markets a wonderful day had by all!

Week 5 Information
Good evening parents,
We...are...half...way...through...the...term! How did that happen 😮
Just a few notices for this week...
Sight words
Thank you for all of your ongoing support with sight word practise at home. I have loved seeing the children be so eager to take their sight word test! The amazing Mrs. Hughes has worked so hard to make sure each child is tested almost every week, a truly outstanding feat to get through. To ease up her work load and to ensure the children get adequate time to practise their words, the children will be getting tested every fortnight if they pass up to the next set/next 15 words and if they do not pass, they will be tested that next week. This system will help the children gain more confidence in using their sight words in their daily writing.
Book week
A friendly reminder that it is book week dress up this Friday. We will have a Book Week themed assembly performed by our Year Four class followed by our Star Citizen Awards. There will be no offical parade, the children will simply stand up and present their costumes at the assembly, in their spot.
Targeting Mental Maths
We are currently up to unit 13 (due this Friday). Thank you so much for marking your children's work and giving them instant feedback on their work, as they complete it. Please let me know if your child experiences any difficulties by writing a small message next to the question. The children's maths confidence has definitely grown since starting the book last term!
Reading tests
Since week 2, each of the children have been tested in their reading. I have been so proud of their efforts and each of the children have grown in their reading abilities since last term. Mrs. Sorgiovanni and I have conferenced each week on the children's reading and we are lucky enough to be able to listen to almost every reading group twice a week. Each child has their own reading goal that is personalised to them and their ability to take on teacher feedback is very pleasing.
Procedures for news
Thank you to the parents who have helped their child prepare for their procedures last week. I have loved seeing the children's confidence in speaking in front of an audience blossom. We have had cooking procedures, video making procedures, planting procedures and quad bike riding procedures. Funnily enough, the 'unloading the dishwasher' and 'making your be' procedures have not made an appearance yet 😬
Keep an eye on the blog for some of our Science and Maths learning from the last couple of weeks!
Have a lovely day.

Keeping Safe - Child Safe Curriculum
Good afternoon parents,
This Friday the children will be taking part in the Keeping Safe lesson about body parts. We will be reading a story called 'Everyone's got a bottom' and emphasising the fact that all parts of their body are private. I understand that the children may laugh and giggle when we talk about the anatomical names, but this is important for every child to know.
This is in conjunction with the Child Protection Curriculum which has been mandated in all schools in Western Australia.
Please find the lesson outline below and a link for the outline of the book if you feel you need to discuss this with your child after Friday.

Week 4 information
Good evening parents,
I can't believe another week has been and gone! We have had a busy week in Year 1P with our introduction to money, spaghetti Science and thinking way back to the olden days...the questions about the time before internet have been hilarious!
A few reminders for this week...
Mission Markets
Thank you for all of your donations of popcorn! If you can help with bagging on Wednesday afternoon from 2.15pm, we would love to have you!
This Thursday the children will be taking part in our school feast day known as the Mission Markets. The children are invited to bring $5.00 to spend during the day which will comprise of:
9.30am Mass in the morning at OLOSC church
10.30am Creating a class art work dedicated to Mary
11.45am Year One children invited to participate in the mini fete (we have tried to go sugar free this year so there will hopefully be reduced amounts of chocolate coming home!)
1.30pm The whole school participates in multiage rotations throughout the school comprising of games and activities with different classroom teachers.
If you could please pack a reusable bag for your child to use for the day, that would be very helpful.
DONATIONS FOR YEAR TWO
If you have any old books, toys or knick knacks you would like to donate to the Year Two 'pre loved' stall, please bring them into our wet area and I will ensure they get re-homed for you :)
Bunnings visit
If you would like to come in and help for an hour or so on Wednesday morning, we would love to have you! The lovely Breeanna will be here from 9.30am.
Book week
Book week will be taking place next Friday the 23rd of August. Have a look below for some great ideas for the day. The theme of Book week is Reading is my Super power, but the children are welcome to come as their favourite book character.
Have a lovely week!

URStrong Friendology check in session
Today the Year 1P students took part in a 'check in session' related to the URStrong Friendology program. This session was designed to check to see how the children would react if they were faced with a friendship fire. We explored how the children could 'stand up for themselves' if they were faced with 'mean on purpose' behaviour and what a positive reaction would entail. The children were very excited to bring in their stuffed friends to school and were very excited to get started.
Within this session, we spoke about the 4 friendship facts which were:
#1 No friendship (or relationship) is perfect
#2 Every friendship is different
#3 Trust and Respect are the two most important qualities of a friendship
#4 Friendships change...and that ok!
We learnt about how we can approach people if we think we might be having a friendship fire. The most important part of putting out a friendship fire is being able to retell the situation and explain how it made them feel (whilst being calm and collected). We had some great conversations walking around the room and we practised using our soft toys.
We also talked about what type of things were 'mean on purpose' and what might just be something we need to walk away from and spend less time with that person. The main aspect of this program is for the children to be able to recognise that they can handle their own friendships and be able to identify what makes a healthy and an unhealthy friendship.
Below are some photos of the students participating in a Friendology mixer and then celebrating all our wonderful friendship by dancing and singing songs. The children loved learning about Friendology.

Week 3 Information
Dear Parents,
I can't believe that we are beginning week 3! The weeks are flying by! A few important bits of information for the coming weeks:
Mission Markets
Next Thursday the 15th of August we have our mission markets! We are asking for donations of popping corn (the kind that can go into a pop corn maker) of one packet per child to be placed into the popcorn box at the front of the room.
We are asking for helpers to help make popcorn the day before (Wednesday 14th) from 2.15pm - 3.00pm using a popcorn maker.
OR
Help man our popcorn stall at the mission Markets from 11.30am - 12.45pm on Thursday 15th August.
If you can help on either of these days, please email me... we would be most appreciative!
Friendology Stuffies needed for Thursday
This Thursday the children will be acting out 'How to put out a friendship fire' with their stuffies or cuddly toys. We are asking your children to bring in their soft toys on Thursday to practise this great skill of standing up for themselves when they are faced with a friendship issue.
Bunnings visit
Next Wednesday the 14th of August the Year Ones are very lucky to be participating in a workshop run by Bunnings. We will be making something very special for our Dad's for Father's Day so if there are any Mum's that would like to come and help from 9.30-10.30pm, we would love to see you there! Please let me know via email if you can come along.
News topic for Weeks 4 and 5
Next week and the week after, the children will be required to present a procedure to the class. As we are learning about the procedure structure with in our talk for writing unit, I will provide the children with a procedure template but please don't feel like you need to stick to this. Some ideas they can present a procedure on could be:
- How to make a Vegemite sandwich
- How to make slime/goo
- How to make a bed
- How to make ANZAC biscuits
- How to set the dinner table
- How to unload the dishwasher
- How to wash your hair/dog
Can you see what I'm getting at...Photo evidence or samples are always welcomed too :)
The main aim for their news telling is that they understand how they can present to an audience while giving eye contact, projecting their voice and answering questions about their related topic. I will send these templates out at the end of the week.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Thanks for your on going support.
