Welcome back to Term 3!

Good evening parents,

Welcome back to Term 3!

It has been a great start to the term and it has been wonderful to see the children after two weeks off. The children have come back ready and raring to go and I love their enthusiasm! A big welcome to Kane Appleton who began his time at OLC today :)

This term we are looking at a variety of topics and basing these concepts around the children's interests and ideas. We will be asking the children what they would like to learn about  in regards to these topics with a question box at the back of our room. The children always come up with some great ideas to guide their own learning!

Our writing focus this term will look at different types of Poetry and Narrative structure which will also incorporate Dream Time Stories. Our Math focus this term will be Money, 2D and 3D shapes, Measurement (capacity and length), addition and subtraction,  revision of skip counting (2's, 5's, 10's), basic fractions, place value revision and odd and even numbers.

In our HASS subjects we will have a focus on things from past and how children's daily lives differ from those of their parents or Grandparents childhoods. We will also be looking at a variety of Dream Time Stories and comparing these stories to our modern day activity of story telling.

In Science we will be exploring how we can observe changes in the sky and landscape and how this can affect our ability to care for natural, managed and constructed features.

Think Mentals

Today the children's Think Mentals books went home for homework and the children were very excited to get their beloved Maths books back!

This term, we will begin completing one unit per week. However I will only be collecting the books every two weeks for marking. I have chosen to collect the books every two weeks as I know that there are some week nights that the children have other commitments or family events that prevent them from completing particular days so I thought completing two units over two weeks might alleviate some of the pressure to get everything in on time.

Please refer to the schedule below which outlines when each of the units are due.

Think Mentals schedule
Weeks
Units and date
Week 1 and 2
Unit 7 and 8 due 28th July
Weeks 3 and 4
Unit 9 and 10 due 11th August
Weeks 5 and 6
Unit 11 and 12 due 25th August
Week 7 and 8
Unit 13 and 14 due 8th September
Weeks 9 and 10
Unit 15 and 16 due 22nd September

Thank you for your on going support with marking and providing your children with your feedback.

If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to email me.

Grandparent's Day 2017

Grandparents Day was a huge success for Year 1P we had so many wonderful grandparents come in to celebrate this wonderful OLC tradition. The day started with a beautiful prayer service dedicated to our beautiful Grandparents. The slide show that Mrs. Meyer put together was absolutely stunning and I can definitely vouch for some tears eyes in the crowd. The grandparents then enjoyed a delicious morning tea and came into the classroom to participate in some activities.

The children loved showing their work to their Grandparents, painting a picture with them and creating a pic collage of photos of them.  The smiles from both children and grandparents alike were a wonderful sight to see!

A great day was had by all, below are some pictures from the day

Many thanks, Miss Prowse

End of term treat for Year Ones!

To celebrate the outstanding term we have had, the children will be watching the movie 'The Ant Bully' (rated G) which focus' on our Science unit of MiniBeasts and it also ties into our Friendology program of 'Standing up for yourself'.

We will be watching his on Friday as a co-hort between recess and lunch after our English block.

We are really excited to reflect on our learning and find different parts of the film that correlate with our findings.

If you have any questions or concerns please email me.

Thank you

We are Halfway Through Year One!

Sight Words
This week, a revision sheet will go home with your child for the first 100 sight words. All of the children have been retested and on the first 100 words and the words that have been spelled incorrectly are written on your child’s revision sheet. If you get time over the holidays could you please practise these words with your child to help them master the first 100.

Homework
This week the only homework that we are sending home is sight words. Readers are going back to the Library and all Comprehension Packs will not go home again until next term. If you have any overdue Comprehension Packs, please send them back to school, along with all readers on Monday. As of Week One next term, the students are asked to complete one unit per week in their Think Mentals books. The Think Mentals will be collected fortnightly for signing. If you could please continue to mark your child’s work as they complete it to give them immediate feedback it would be much appreciated. Unit 6 and Unit 7 will be due on Friday 28th July (end of Week 2).

Grandparent’s Day
A reminder that all Grandparents are invited to our annual Grandparent’s Day this Tuesday. Our Prayer Service begins at 9am in the hall, followed by morning tea at 9:30am and classrooms will be open from 10am to 11 am. In Year One the children will complete 3 activities during that time – one in 1R, one in 1P and another in the Wet Area. Grandparents are invited to come in across this time and find their grandchild who will show them what they have been learning about in Year One.

PLD Spelling Test
Today the children completed their PLD spelling assessment. Many of the children did very well with their test and should be very proud of the spelling concepts they have learnt this term. There will be some children who will remain in their current spelling group as they did not achieve the 80% required to move into the next phonic group. Please be assured that if your child did not move up, they will be exposed to a completely new set of spelling words with the revision sounds.

Happy Week 10 and I hope you all have a lovely holiday with your family!

Cross country For 2017!

The Year Ones did a wonderful job of running the cross country today! Despite the cold and windy weather, the year ones pushed through and ran the course with outstanding results!

After a brilliant dance warm up from Mrs. Sinclair, the children were ready to go with their race!

The Year 1P boys and girls managed to take out both first and second place for both of the races - proving we had our running shoes on!

Congratulations to our champion boy Hudson Archer,  runner up champion boy Kai Gleeson, champion girl Piper Huxtable and runner up champion girl Aurelia Prestipino.

Everyone ran so well and I was definitely a super proud teacher!

Thanks you to all the parents who came down to watch, it was a great morning.

A way you can help them is to call out a word with that particular sound for them to write down on a scrap piece of paper eg. if you child is in the blue group you can use the 'tr' sound, ask your child to write down the word trip, trap, train and so on.

If you need any more information, please email me to let me know.

Many Thanks

Miss Prowse
