Year One Family Mass

Thank you to all of those people that attended the Year One family Mass. The children were extremely reverent and respectful throughout the mass and sung beautifully.

Thank you to all of those children who had jobs throughout the Mass and a big thank you to you, the lovely parents for bringing your children along to share this special Mass.

Thank you to Mrs. Meyer, Mrs. Horrocks and Mr. Torrese for the wonderful music throughout the night and from all accounts, I have been told the pizza was delicious!

We are officially 100 days smarter!!

Today we celebrated the 100th Day of School and I can certainly say the whole class had a wonderful day! We participated in a variety of 'One hundred' activities throughout the day and the children had lots of fun reflecting on all of the things they had learnt throughout the year.

We said we learnt things such as:
- Skip counting in 2's,5's and 10's
- How to read a chapter book
- How to write a whole page of writing
- Use full stops and capital letters
...even how to sit on the mat nicely!

In the next 100 days we said we would like to learn how to...
- Do 'Read to self' for 15 minutes
- Write six pages of writing
-  Do a handstand for 30 seconds
-  Skip count in 3's
( and one of my favourites) - Do a fully cool back flip and land on my feet.

We participated in a variety of 100 activities including:
- Write 100 words on a piece of paper
- Build a sculpture using 100 cups
- Write all the way to 100 in chalk
- Write 100 rhyming words
- Build a structure out of 100 pieces of lego.

Here are some pictures of our '100 Day' activities!

After our activities it was time for our delicious shared lunch. We LOVED tasting all the delicious food and there were many happy faces when the sweets came out! Both classes were full to the brim at the end of lunch and enjoyed having a play after the wonderful feed.

We absolutely loved celebrating our 100 Days of School and we have to say a BIG thank you to all the Mum's and Dad's who cooked and made some delicious food!

Congratulations on getting your children through 100 days of school!

Mission Market Stall for Year One - Lucky Dip

Good evening parents,

This year OLC will be celebrating and participating in the Mission Markets on Friday the 12th of August.

This is a wonderful school event that helps raise funds for our Catholic Mission focus and creates a wonderful atmosphere for the children to have a little fun!

In Year 1P we will are running a lucky dip stall so we are asking for donations of:

- Fun erasers
- Pencils
- Mini coloured pens
- Coloured sharpeners
- Mini writing pads
- Novelty party toys (such as mini mazes, whistles, party medals etc.)

These do not need to be expensive and any donation you would like to give is fantastic!

If you were able to also donate some small party bags to make up the lucky dips bags that would be very much appreciated.

I would ask that all donations for the lucky dip bags are in by Wednesday 10th August so I can see if more items are needed.

If there are any parents that are willing to help make up the lucky dip bags on the Thursday 11th of August, that would be wonderful!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

We are 100 days smarter!

Good evening parents,

This Tuesday the 26th of July, the Year One students will be 100 days smarter! To celebrate this wonderful milestone, we will be holding a shared lunch for both Year One classes.

We would really appreciate if the boys could bring a small plate of savoury food and the girls bring a small plate of sweet food. As this is a shared lunch, the children will only be required to bring their recess and sip and crunch.

Please ensure there are no nuts in the food that is brought in as we have children in our classes with allergies.

Throughout the day, the children will be focusing on a variety of hundred day activities integrating into our Literacy, Maths and Art subject areas.

The children (and the teachers) are looking forward to celebrating this wonderful occasion!

Thank you

Welcome to Term 3!

Welcome back to Term 3!

It has been a very cold start to the term, however the children have come back ready and raring to go and I love their enthusiasm!

This term we are looking at a variety of topics with an integrated look at the Olympics over the next three weeks.

Our writing focus this term will look at different types of Poetry and Narrative structure which will also incorporate Dream Time Stories.

Our Math focus this term will be Place value (up to three digit numbers), Money, 2D and 3D shapes, Measurement (capacity and length), addition and subtraction, skip counting (2's, 5's, 10's), basic fractions and odd and even numbers.

In our HASS subjects we will have a focus on things from past and how children's daily lives differ from those of their parents or grandparents childhoods.

We will also be looking at a variety of Dream Time Stories and comparing these stories to our modern day activity of story telling.

In Science we will be exploring how we can observe changes in the sky and landscape and how this can affect our ability to care for natural, managed and constructed features.

Some important dates in Term 3:

100 Days of school celebration Tuesday 26th July (more information to follow)

Year 1 family mass - Saturday 30th July (week 2) 6:00pm

Australian Wildlife incursion (more information to follow) - Monday 8th August (week 4)

Pupil Free Day - Friday 19th August (week 5)

Learning Journeys - Monday 19th September (week 10)

Think Mental Math books

Good evening parents,

Today the children's Think Mentals books went home for homework and the children were very excited to get their beloved Maths books back!

This term, we will begin completing one unit per week. However I will only be collecting the books every two weeks for marking. I have chosen to collect the books every two weeks as I know that there are some week nights that the children have other commitments or family events that prevent them from completing particular days so I thought completing two units over two weeks might alleviate some of the pressure to get everything in on time.

Therefore this week (week 1) and next week (week 2) the children are required to complete both Unit 5 and 6 (pages 16-20).

The book will be due in on Friday 29th of July, but I will send a reminder in before this date.

If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to email me.

Sight Word Progress in Year 1P

Dear Parents,

The children have been doing a wonderful job learning how to read and write their sight words over the last semester. Mrs Rann and I have been closely monitoring the children's progress and we have been very impressed with the results.

Many of the children would have received either a note indicating if they need a bit more practise on particular words or have in turn received the next set if they passed the assessment.

We have been collecting the sight word sets when the children have mastered them however, please find a picture of the entire 100 sight words that the children are required to know by the end of Year One.

These are the next 100 sight words that some of the children are already up to, which is very pleasing!
(the highlighted words are the 'difficult words to spell' words)

Over the next few weeks, I will be sending home some games and activities that will help the children learn their sight words in a fun and motivating way.

If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to email me.

Grandparents Day 2016

Grandaparents Day was a huge success for Year 1P we had so many wonderful grandparents, parents, aunties and uncles come in to celebrate this wonderful OLC tradition. The day started with a wonderful story called 'How to babysit a Grandad'. We then moved into a variety of rotation activities that included: Painting, a Grandparents day writing activity, reading some Granparent books, iPad activities and some fun outdoor games.

The children absolutely loved showing their grandparents how the classroom worked and they were extremely proud to show their work around the classroom. The smiles from both children and grandparents alike were a wonderful sight to see.

A great day was had by all, below are some pictures from the day.
