Week 4 information

Good afternoon parents,

I hope you have had a lovely weekend and have enjoyed this glorious sunshine! Just a few messages about the events coming up this week.

Year One family Mass
Thank you to all of those families who came to Mass on Saturday night. It was fantastic to see so many families involved in the mass and I especially loved the beautiful singing and dancing from the children!

Prayer Assembly
It is our Year 1P prayer assembly this Friday at 9am and I have given some reading parts to some of the children. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Lollies for the Fete
I think our donation box is over flowing! Thank you to those who have donated their 2 packets of lollies, if there are any more donations, can you please bring them to school ASAP.

Newspaper donations
If you have any old newspapers at home you would like to bring them in for our STEM project coming up in the next couple of weeks, we would be very appreciative.

Thank you for your ongoing support

Week 3 Information

I hope you've all had a restful weekend and ready to take on week 3! There are a couple of reminders for the coming weeks below:

Year One Family Mass

On Saturday at 6pm the children in Year One's and their families are invited to attend Mass at Our Lady of the Southern Cross church at 6pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity to come together as a class community and celebrate a beautiful Mass together. There will be pizza after the Mass for the children.

Donation of lollies for the Fete

Thank you to all of those people who have donated lollies to the Fete so far. If you haven't donated yet, the box is out in the wet area just outside our classroom.

STEM Project - Newspapers required!

What is black, white and read all over....? NEWSPAPER!
As a part of our Science project for this term, the children will be creating a chair for Baby Bear made entirely out of newspaper. The children must work together in teams to bend, stretch and manipulate the newspaper to be sturdy enough to hold a toy bear. We are easking for donations of newspaper over the next few weeks and more information about the task (and parent helpers) will be announced shortly.

Castles Project

This term in Visual Arts and Technology we have been exploring the characteristics and features of castles. We already know that castles have been made popular by some fairy tales and that they are an important part of history, particularly in Europe.
This website contains some fun facts about castles that you can read to your child at home:
https://www.ducksters.com/history/middle_ages_castles.php

On Friday of Week 5, we will be using recycled materials such as cardboard boxes, netting, plastic lids and any other materials that the children can think of, to construct our own castles. Next week I will update our blog with a list of materials that the children and I have brainstormed together. From there, we will need to get collecting at home! If each child could bring their materials to school in a bag labelled with their name on it by Friday 9th November (Week 5) that would be fantastic! We will also prepare some materials which we already have at school that the children can access on the day. If you can help on this day from 10am-11am with our castle construction, please contact me by email, or let me know in the classroom.

Year One buddy Mass

On Wednesday the Year 6 students escorted the Year 1 students to Our Lady of the Southern Cross church to participate in the weekly parish mass.

Each of the older students was responsible for two younger students on the walk to the church and were excellent role models as reverent but active participants in the mass.

Father Ian congratulated the students on their participation and behaviour. This “Buddy” time is very special in making OLC the community it is.

We were very lucky with the beautiful weather and we enjoyed participating in the Mass with our buddies.

A message from Claire Gilpin our Practicum student for Term four

Hello,

My name is Claire Gilpin and I have the privilege of completing my final Teaching Practicum at Our Lady of the Cape and getting to know you and your children.

Whilst I have met some of you in class last term, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am currently studying a Graduate Diploma of Education at Edith Cowan University and starting tomorrow (Monday 15/10), I will be in 1P full time for 6 weeks.

Having completed a Bachelor of Business, Majoring in Marketing and Management, and enjoyed a career in Human Resources for 10 years, I made the decision to pursue a more fulfilling career in teaching and moved to Dunsborough in March to be closer to family. I can’t wait for the warmer weather to arrive, so I can continue exploring more of this amazing area!

Over the next 6 weeks I will be involved in preparing and delivering lessons, as well as the associated assessment and evaluation processes under the guidance of Miss Prowse. I have a love of learning and am passionate about creating a classroom environment where all students try their best, respect each other, learn from their mistakes, celebrate everyone’s successes and where we all work as a team.

I’m so excited to meet you all! You are always welcome to come and chat to me to find out what I have planned for my time in Year 1.

Incursion Fun in Year One

This week we were lucky enough to have two incursions to come and visit us at OLC. We had to wonderful Constable Care and the super Scientists from Scitech.

Constable Care came and spoke to the children about keeping safe and what to do in case of emergency. I know that  they all loved screaming '000' at the top of their lungs in the puppet show. We now know what to do in case of an emergency using the DRS ABC acronym. A wonderful morning was had by all and we even had the real police come at the end of the show and introduce themselves to the children

Scitech was also a stand out show with the children taking part in both the show and the workshop activities. The children loved seeing the presenters throw balloons, make balls levitate and conduct experiments using toys from around the house. The involvement of the crowd was a highlight of the show!

The workshop showed us what happens when friction becomes an important factor in the forces of motion. The children loved experimenting with toy cars and ramps and found that they could move the toy cars with their breath!

It was an awesome day of Science and discovery!

Welcome To Term 4

Here we are approaching the beginning of Term 4! What a whirlwind of learning, fun and events we have experienced this year so far!

Homework

Think Mentals: We will continue to complete one unit per week next term, however if your child is a keen Mathematician they are able to work further into the following units if they wish.

Reading: We will continue to send readers home every two days for nightly reading this term.

Sight Words: The children will be tested early on in the term and we will continue to send home personal sight word lists throughout Term 4. Please watch the blog later this week for some important info about sight words when your child reaches past stage three words.

News

A photograph of the News roster/groups is as below and the rosters will also be placed up on the parent board outside the classroom.

Gathering Time

Just a reminder that we have Gathering Time from 8:30-8:45am in the classroom. The children are required to be at school by the 8:45am bell, to allow them time to organise their materials and transition into the school day. This important time in the morning sets the precedent for the day and allows for a smooth transition into the morning routine.

Lost Property

The office has advised that there are many lost jumpers currently in the lost property box. If you are missing any jumpers please take a look at the lost property box ASAP.

Dates for Your Diary

Tuesday 9th October: Students Commence & Constable Care Incursion
Thursday 11th October: Scitech Incursion
Saturday 27th October: Year One Family Mass @ 6pm at the OLC Church
Friday 2nd November; Year 1P Prayer Assembly
Sunday 11th November : OLC School Fete
Please refer to the calendar on the school website for other events throughout the term.

Thank you!

Thank you for another fabulous term in Year One. A special thanks to those of you who have been able to assist in the classroom for parent help, making our Maths pencil cases, preparing other resources and assisting on our excursion.  I hope you have all had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday break with your children and are ready for our final term of Year One. Our new parent help roster for the term will be placed up on the parent information board outside the classroom.

Learning Journeys

A big thank you to all the parents that attended the Year One Learning Journeys this week.  The children were both excited and proud to share their work with you all. The feedback from parents proved to be a wonderful afternoon of learning!

The gallery walk around the class was a great way for the children to reflect on their learning and the Art folio of work created some beautiful one on one time between parents and children. I felt so lucky to be in a room with very supportive and loving parents! I especially loved hearing the children comment on their progress since the beginning of the year. One of my favourite comments was 'This writing isn't mine...I'm way neater', something I relish in as a teacher as I can explain how far they have come ;)
